I found a few used cars sold privately and checked them out and just need to check there no finance etc on them and was wondering who does a very detailed HPI check for a fair price ? £3.95 for a basic check at www.mycarcheck.com |

When I bought a Daimler I paid £400 for an HPI check and a motor engineers report. I was fairly glad that I paid for it - although it was HPI clear the rot that the engineer uncovered would have required £3,000 (minimum) to fix. 400 quid's quite a lot to spend to avoid bending down and looking underneath. |

I'd been all under the car and couldn't see the rot in question. The owner refused to believe there was a problem and took it to his local dealer to get a clean bill of health for the car. He was the one who got the quote for £3K to fix it, at which point he telephoned me to let me know how much it would cost to repair and said that since it wasn't an MoT failure at the time he's just keep running the car until it failed then scrap it. |

I stand corrected (it must be these shorts). A bit scary that so much rot can be hidden from view to such a degree. |

Most of it was hidden behind "stuff" including a FoB V12 engine that neatly filled the engine bay. I couldn't see much of the firewall and it looked OK when I lifted carpets. However the perforating rust was behind the dashboard. A large part of the cost was that it was an engine and gearbox out job to repair. |
