BAAAh sadly the car I was looking at is a CAT C writeoff and the
chap
said it was HPI clear with report no doubt made on photoshop!

I thought it was too good to be true. Time to find something more
realistic.

Good job you have a suspicious nature. Many would take it at face
value.

I only trust my dear ole' mum but not before putting her through an
terrogation

Joking aside, I always treat all used cars I look at with something
sinister to hide and sometimes they do have something dodgy about
them or such like. Rarely you find an honest seller, everyone tries
to hide something.

I flick every switch push every button check every little detail I
can without stripping the engine down

I think its all the horror stories I've hard about lemon cars so am
very cautious.

I just checked on another car, came up as clean on the HPI except
having had another plate which looked like a personal plate, no
interest from anyone on either of the plates. Looking good so far,
will give it a butchers tommorow.

That last paragraph sounds vaguely familiar...

What the **** was that ****e???

You know how the trade have their own slanguage that they all know, but
means ****all to anyone else.

Well that is a very tongue in cheek **** take of the same thing. Sounds
like gibberish, but looks like it should make sense to some one, but
exactley the opposite.

When I bought a Daimler I paid £400 for an HPI check and a motor
engineers report. I was fairly glad that I paid for it - although it was
HPI clear the rot that the engineer uncovered would have required £3,000
(minimum) to fix.

400 quid's quite a lot to spend to avoid bending down and looking
underneath.

I'd been all under the car and couldn't see the rot in question. The
owner refused to believe there was a problem and took it to his local
dealer to get a clean bill of health for the car. He was the one who got
the quote for £3K to fix it, at which point he telephoned me to let me
know how much it would cost to repair and said that since it wasn't an
MoT failure at the time he's just keep running the car until it failed
then scrap it.

I stand corrected (it must be these shorts).
A bit scary that so much rot can be hidden from view to such a degree.

If it's hard to see, it's bloody difficult to weld ;-)

Most of it was hidden behind "stuff" including a FoB V12 engine that
neatly filled the engine bay. I couldn't see much of the firewall and it
looked OK when I lifted carpets. However the perforating rust was behind
the dashboard. A large part of the cost was that it was an engine and
gearbox out job to repair.
