Hi, has anyone had a problem with one of these cars of intermittant starting? I have had the injectors checked, new glow plugs, new battery and new starter motor fitted. It will go for a couple of weeks with starting first time cold or hot, then for no reason it wont start when cold untill I have churned the starter for about four or five times, then it will start with a cloud of black smoke from the exhaust, after that initial start it will start ok unless it's left for about eight hours or so then , then have to go through the whole starting process again. A week or so of this and suddenly it will start again first turn of the key.Help please, it's just about doing my head in now. My local garage has had it on a diognostic machine a couple of times and found nothing wrong.

There's not a lot of electronic gubbins to interrogate on the 1.9TD
Peugeot engine, I'm pretty sure there's no ECU to speak of for instance.

It does sound like perhaps a glow plug related problem. There may be a
glow plug relay playing up intermittently, I'd have the circuitry for
them checked out.

Douglas Payne gurgled happily, sounding much like
they were saying:

Depends. Thinking about ZXs & Xants, earlier cars were a simple pump, but
later cars had an electronic pump with built-in ECU. I'd have thought
there's a good chance that a 406 would be late enough to have that. With
the ZX & Xant, they put the keypad immobiliser on at the same time as the
electronic pump, not before, because the simpler pump couldn't be
immobilised...

I consider myself to be corrected. Do you think this ECU logs things
like iffy starts?

We have an immobiliserised R reg non turbo diesel 306. It's still
pretty low-tech. Especially when compared to the Saab or the Audi, but
I daresay the pump will be pretty uncomplicated as there's no boost to
be dealing with. I've never had it connected to a dignostics machine as
when something goes wrong, its usually fairly obvious.

I very much doubt it.

As you say, it's low-tech, and basically just allows a better fuel map
and immobilising. I've never heard of anybody reading fault codes from
'em, but that doesn't mean they don't store 'em. I don't remember ever
seeing a cheapo Gunson-style fault code reader for 'em, although they
certainly did one for the petrols of the same era.
