Engines can always be replaced easier than bodywork...

Personally I prefer red or black but I'd have a 205 GTI.

Apparently they all start to crack underneath the door seal at the top of
the door aperture.

Well there's something I never knew and will look for should I go down
that path..

I wouldn't! 140,000miles ? Incomplete service history and typical ebay
description.
He doesn't know what suspension is fitted but must have the receipts and
also for the back axle.
There is a different engine so none of the numbers match the documents.
It was kept in storage wrapped in blankets but regularly taken out - without
tax and insurance or MOT?
Alloy wheels are butchered and unfinished and why would he mention what it
failed the MOT on - at least
he will have the fail and pass info to prove what he claims.
The owner claims to be a perfectionist but leaves lots of jobs incomplete!
He claims to have only driven it to the MOT station, but also said he
started it and took it out regularly!
I've never known a gearbox to feel worn due to NOT being used.
The battery isn't the correct type for a perfectionist and incorrectly
fitted, also part of the braking system
looks rusted, so might be an accident waiting to happen. Has it been
clocked and why is the back so low
down compared to the front being high up? The rear nearside looks like it
has dropped compared to the
offside. The numberplate isn't correct and why would it be changed from the
original ?
The wheels have been sprayed and there is paint on the tyres, how lazy. The
starter motor and air flow
sensors don't work on an engine with a "mere 35k miles". How odd when it
was hardly driven for 9 years.
Although it covered 4000miles in a time it was wrapped in blankets.

So you would be buying a car with lots of faults, lots of bits that don't
work but a box of spares from a scrapyard included to make you feel better.
A car with incomplete service history and a different engine number to the
one registered for the car.
A car on which parts become mechanically worn when they were not used and
travelled 4000miles in a stationary position.
A bit of rust at the front and sides starting to bubble the paintwork where
it has been resprayed. No MOT or tax. Is there even a registration
document that matches the car and the seller's address?
I would avoid it and anyone asking anything over a few hundred pounds for
that is mad. It looks like it's been bought as a car to do up and repair
but is costing too much - or maybe an accident right-off. Look how many
people use the baby excuse on ebay too. A few things don't look right about
it. If you're mad enough to buy, please make sure you get the AA or
equivalent to check the car and documents.

Also be aware that doing any HPI check only guarantees the information
relayed to you is accurate from the source and NOT that the information
content is accurate. I have seen so many people that bought stolen or
written-off cars trying to sue or claim from the companies performing the
HPI checks. All have lost as companies mislead cutomers.

If you can't hear alarm bells ringing by looking at that advert, you need
someone else to go with you!

What sort of power do these engines produce?

130 bhp or thereabout, but they weigh about the same as half an empty
fag packet compared to modern equivalents (of which there are none)

As in, "Do people still drive 'em?"

Yes. They're pretty sought after in good condition. Quick little
buggers, but they're a touch unforgiving if you're used to ESP / ABS /
TC as they don't bother with any of that nonsense.

Probably the best hot hatch of them all, but not the easiest to live
with. Drivetrain shunt can be a pain in traffic as they've got what can
only be described as a "hair trigger" throttle pedal. One of those cars
that *always* wants to be going faster, and very often feels like it
can. Build quality can only be described as "Flaky", they all rattle,
but for actual driving they're great little things.

Just remember one thing "DO NOT LIFT OFF" if you're cornering at high
speed and / or on a wet road, they're prone to spectacular and sudden
lift-off oversteer of the kind you don't forget in a hurry. The GTi 1.9
is the only car I've managed to spin and do four complete rotations in
before somehow just about managing to not hit anything. My 911 was more
forgiving. If someone tried to release a new car with this little quirk
nowadays the Daily Telegraph would have a field day "Killer car on
sale". I have a feeling that this little habit is the main reason there
aren't many left. I've seen so many 205 GTi's with badly repaired rear
1/4 panels I've lost count. It's the first thing I look for on them, the
second is to see if the rear axle is still straight - that normally gets
bent when they spin into a kerb.

Having said that, with a bit of practice there still isn't much that can
compete with a 1.9 on a twisty lane. Very little has ever been made that
can raise a smile like a well sorted, standard, 1.9 GTi with PAS. Ones
without PAS give your arms the kind of workout that the Bullworker™ was
meant to, but it does get lighter with speed.

Driven sensibly they'll do 35 mpg. Having said that, I don't know anyone
who can do that for more than 5-10 minutes other than on a motorway. 25
mpg is more likely, and they like Super Unleaded. If you run them on
normal unleaded, and drive them in the same way everyone else does, the
valves tend to eat into the cylinder head like a fat kid eats cake.
Noise from the valvegear and smoke at start up tends to be a sign of one
that's not been run on super, or hasn't had the oil changed as often as
it wise on 'em - oil changes around every 4000 miles tends to keep them
sweet.

They have another party trick if you get one with the huge sunroof -
open it at above 40 mph with the other windows closed and you'll get to
know exactly what life is like inside a referee's whistle, unbelievable
turbulence. Goes if you open a window though. The sunroof is sealed by
vacuum from the engine, which is a nutty little trick.

Your driving licence will turn into a gibbering wreck in the presence of
one.

Having typed all this out, I'd have another.
