Default Will service make difference to P/X offer

My car is close to needing a service but I don't want to spend the money
unless absolutely necessary as I am looking to getting another car within
the next 4/6 weeks. Should I get the service done and if not will it make a
difference to any P/X from a dealer?

It *may* make a difference if the car is young enough, with reasonably low
mileage, but *only* if the service book is fully stamped with a main dealer
stamp. To be able to sell on the car, a full service history (FSH) can
certainly tip the balance.

On newish cars most dealers throw in a service to the new owner, so if the
service milage is not going to be exceeded by more than about 10%, I
wouldn't bother. If the salesmen mentions it, ask him how much more it
would be worth with the service ;-)

Different answer if you decided to sell privately however...

Chris

I'd be surprised if they even checked that closely before naming the price

Seconded. To a big dealer it won't make a difference, as they'll offer it
to a new customer anyway - unless of course it's too old for them to want
and they're just gonna punt it to auction. It won't make a difference then
either I don't reckon heh.

The last couple of times I've traded cars in at main dealers it was a case
of "Service history?" , "Yep" , "OK"

I've just bought a new VW and (for a laugh) asked one of the dealers I
visited for a p/x price on my 4 year old 117,000 mile 206 SW. Not only did
he go over it with a fine tooth comb but he wanted to see the service
history and counted how many were dealer and how many independent for his
appraisal form, and how long it had to go until it needed another.

All immaterial really as a work colleague bought it for his wife, but I was
amused at the effort he went to when he was clear that they would trade it
on due to the mileage.

says...

The missus bought a Yaris just after Xmas from a dealer, she traded her
very tatty looking fully serviced but only partially stamped (Nationwide
serviced it after local dealership closed and sometimes forgot to stamp
the book even though it was open on the passenger seat as they asked)
2000 Fabia.

They only looked at it in the dark, didn't check all the doors opened
(one didn't), or noticed the crusting from the slight coolant leak
(deliberatly not cleaned up to avoid being accused of hiding problems).
They offered £2000 trade in on a £5k used car. Thank **** they didn't
look too closely. I guess that one was going to the trade auction once
the sale was finalised.
