How to use a tachometer by Marlon
Hi all, having just swapped an automatic for a manual, I now have gears and a tachometer as controllable variables in my driving. So it occured to me that I've never really done that bloke thing of knowing about rev ranges, when "best" to change gear (other than when it feels "right"), and such like. So.... for instance, given there's an obvious upper range to be avoided (as...

VW Fox Mini-Review by Chris Bartram
As it seems traditional here if you have a courtesy car: Basic Fox, 1.2, 55bhp, 80ft/lb. It's not quick. By a good margin. It will go fast enough to get you nicked on the motorway if the copper is feeling unhappy, but there's a fair old load of mechanical thrash. As there is is you try to accelerate any faster than 'in a leisurely manner'. Lets face it though, it's a 1.2L 3-cyl shopping...

BMW satnav and voice control by md1jrw
I bought a 335d coupe back in late Jan and whilst the car is great to drive, I find the sat nav and the associated voice input control/ feedback dreadful. In my previous motors (without satnav) I have used a TomTom, which I love; I would have thought that TomTom would be used as a benchmark by just about every other sat nav designer. Clearly not in the case of BMW. The problems with the...

Worried About Fuel Prices? Shell is not: They Make £1.8m an hour from it by St Georges Day April 23rd
The rising cost of fuel is pushing inflation up all the time - yet in the face of a coming national emergency, it has been revealed that Shell and BP have made record profits over the last six months of $8 billion and $6.75 billion respectively. In Shell’s case, this works out to a profit - not turnover mind - of $1.8 million an hour - was up eight per cent on the same time last year. Shell has...

Van hire co. falsely claiming I returned van with damage Options(part 2) by jgkgolf@hotmail.com
I started this in another thread but just wanted to ask another question. When I hired the van I signed a rental agreement for van A. However when i saw van A I realised it wouldn't be big enough so they gave me van B instead without changing the rental agreement. We checked van B for damage and I signed the 'vehicle checking form' (showing existing damage) for van B. They examined van B on...

Locking wheel nuts by John[_15_]
About 4 weeks ago I bought a secondhand Nissan QX and stupidly I've only just realised that it has locking wheel nuts but there's no "key" socket for them. Assuming that they're factory fitted (because they look *exactly* like the ones on my old QX that I part-ex'd for this one), I went to Nissan main stealers only to be told that they can't supply just the key socket and I would need to get...

Alarm question. by Mike G[_2_]
1997 528i. Last week, and again last night at 3am the alarm went off for no apparent reason. Last night I simply reset it, and it's been OK since. As it was hot yesterday, the car was parked for most of the day with the windows ajar. I was wondering if the alarm interior movement sensor could be triggered by a bug, of the creepy crawly or flying variety. Seems unlikely, as I believe the...

Opentop bus overturns by Mike G[_2_]
Just seen the report of this on 'South Today' TV. http://snipurl.com/38dfe Bus driver was praised for his quick reactions to avoid the collisiion. I'm not blaming the bus driver, but it struck me as odd for him to be praised when his evasive manouvre to avoid the Porche, which was alleged to be on the wrong side of the road, resulted in the bus overturning, with the potential danger to his...

Tyre sealant stuff - which one? by John[_15_]
I've just had my car converted to dual fuel and now have a 67-litre LPG tank in the spare wheel well instead of a spare wheel, so can anyone recommend a good tyre sealant? Each of the tyres is in really good condition with between 6 and 7mm tread depth and the rims are alloys - just in case that makes any difference. Cheers, John

Which tiny ****box? by Steve Firth
I need something to do "quite a bit" of shuttling backwards and forwards over the next few months. The longest journey is unlikely to be more than 60 miles but could be repeated sev eral times a day. So I want to buy something locally that's really cheap and economical to run and thrash it into the ground. The two on offer are a Daihatsu Charade and a Smart Brabus. Both exactly the same price,...
