Small battery big engine? by Yvan@office
I have 20 years old 1.6 liter car that has good 45Ah battery, and another car of the same age, that I rarely use, with 2.3 literengine that, according to the manual, needs 65Ah battery. Will 45Ah battery get damaged if I use it to start the other car? Can big current draw damage it? -- ___ ____ /__/ / \ ** Registrovani korisnik Linuksa #291606 **

Ford Escort parts and prices by Robert[_6_]
Hi, An elderly relative has an Escort which has not been driven for years. The tyres and battery are flat, so pretty useless by now and tax and mot have long expired. She would like to get some money for it; I'm guessing breaking it for parts is the only practical option? But are escort parts used on modern fords or is it only good for scrap now? TIA

AQM and ATF: what's the difference? by Fred[_7_]
Hi, I saw two automatic transmission fluids in the shop: AQM and AQF. I presume some cars need one and some cars the other, but why; what is the difference between them? Actually I have a manual and was looking to buy some fluid to use as a fuel additive because it has been recommended many times here before, that redex and others use atf as their main ingredient. For use as injector cleaner...

Spark plug diagnosis. by Douglas Payne
Yes, there are a load of charts online and in haynes books, but can anyone tell me if there's anything obviously amiss with the condition of this roughly 10,000 mile old plug? http://snipr.com/ver4j (jpg of a spark plug) The reason I ask is that I took it upon myself to open the oil filler cap (on the camshaft cover) of my 1999 Peugeot 106 1.1 while it was running today and was hit with a...

Paint on rust converter by seabreeze
I would like to use a paint on rust converter to deal with surface rust on the underneath of my van. I have tried Loctite 7503 and Rust Doctor, but when I have used them before the rust still seems to come back under the paint despite carefully removing as much loose rust as possible, following instructions and using a red primer under top coat. Suggestions gratefully recieved.

There's gotta be an easier way... by Tim Downie[_3_]
Okay, I know I'm not a DIY god but how do other folk deal with those diabolical "spring****its" AKA "brake shoe retaining springs"? I remember when I was young (40 years or so ago) and finding them a right PITA but thought that in the intervening years, someone would have come along with a better design, but no. I was looking at the rear drum brakes in my daughter's Corsa to find out why...

air intake components by Fred[_7_]
Hi, I had to remove various air ducts to gain access to look for the vacuum leak on my c3 diesel (see other thread). Can I ask two things? One duct contained the air mass sensor. When I took the car to the garage, they told me they had cleaned the air mass sensor and doing this "usually clears things up". Is that right or was it an excuse? Should the sensor be cleaned every x months/ x...

Multipla overheating by Neil[_4_]
Got my multipla back from the garage yesterday. It was making a racket when you put you foot on the clutch. New clutch kit fitted. Took it out for the first time this morning and it oveheated. Warning lights came on....messages appeared telling me to turn the engine off or else. Engine was undoubtedly very hot indeed. The air from the heater was scorching and the block smelt hot. However the...

c3 vacuum leak/egr problem by Fred[_7_]
Hi, Thanks to the advice from Mr Cheerful and rp, I have been trying to follow the vacuum hose from the pump on my 16v 1.4L diesel Citroen c3. The hose runs from the pump to the brakes via a tee. The other branch runs to a black plastic box on the back of the engine. Whilst the box is not the cause of the leak, I was just wondering what this box is and what it does: can anyone tell me?

Roorbar bolts by Him & Her[_2_]
Hi all, Anyone any bright idea's of where to get some replacement bolts ( or a 5 sided key ) for my genuine Renault roofbars? Renault are a waste of time. Bolt looks like a standard allen key at first glance but only has 5 sides. Either need a "new" key or suggestions for a source of suitable replacement

Replacing a diesel injector connector by Paul M
Got an '06 Vectra 1.9 CDTi with a dodgy injector connector on injector #3. Does anyone know what other models share the same connector so I can scout the local scrappers, or suggest an alternative source. I'm thinking the only options are to replace the whole loom (err... no), or chop and solder a replacement connector in. I'm not missing a better 3rd solution am I? I suppose it's possible...

Replacing brake fluid. by Ret.
Bearing in mind that most brake fluid is clear - how do you know when you have 'purged' all the old fluid from your system? I can't even discover what the brake fluid capacity is of my car. Most bleeding instructions merely tell you to keep pumping until the fluid runs clear and is free of air bubbles - but if your brake fluid has been replaced regularly every two years, then even the old...

What are my CO emission figures? by Mike Barnard
I've been looking at the new tax bands and wondering where my Mondeo would fit in if it wasn't older than 2001. I've googled and found very little for the older cars. Does anyone know of a site with figures? It's a 1996, early Mk2, Mondeo 2.0 manual. I get about 28mpg at the moment with mostly town driving if that is a guide to what comes out the back. Thanks.

Vauxhall 1.6L Air Leak? by Kipling
Hi I have a Vx 1.6L Petrol/LPG Combo Van. 2003. The engine is the same as normally knocks about in the Astra of the same vintage. I have a bit of an issue with it.Sometimes perhaps 1-15 times, when i push the accellerator to the floor, or at leas a good way down, or the revs rise with under load, the engine begins to make a loudish "Phhheerrrrtt" sort of

Volvo V70 Fuse Keeps Blowing by Ben Short
No 13 fuse specifically, which is a 20amp fuse for the 12 lighter sockets. Well the problem is it keeps going. I used the lighter socket to power a TomTom and it went. So the garage put another one in and I came to use the TT again and it wouldn't charge it, then upon inspection I see its blown the fuse again. I am going to take it to the Corner Garage but wonder if anyone here could shed...

Battery drain overnight? by paulfoel
Battery is always pretty much flat every morning - car starts just about. However, once its started in the morning its pretty much ok for the rest of the day. Sorry for being thick, but can I use a multimeter to see if anything is draining the battery? If it is, how do I find out what?
