Tom Tom by David Bowman
I've had a Tomtom Go520 for a few years now and went for a drive last week on the M3/M4. Where the red speed camera warning light appears I keep getting a '50' in a red circle and a different gong to the one I get for speed cameras. The red circle has a countdown of some 400 meters. This happens on any speed limit road and whether there are road works or not. The figure is always 50 nothing...

Same cars? by johannes
I know that Fiat Punto Grande, Vauxhall Corsa, Alfa Mito, Lancia Ypsilon (AKA Chrysler Ypsilon) are all cars from the same platform. Fiat 500 and Ford Ka are also from the same platform. But today I spotted a Fiat Punto Evo parked next to a new Ford Fiesta, the resememblence was uncanny. Change the front grille, and the Fiat Punto Evo transforms into a Ford Fiesta and visa versa. Is this a new...

Once engine has warmed up its fine... Already changed spark plugs (why not its cheap). What next? Plug leads? Distributor cap?

REPOST: Intermittent high / fast idle by Lester Burnham
(Previous thread, he http://groups.google.com/group/uk.rec.cars.maintenance/browse_frm/thread/d6dd2f386707eca0#) Thought I'd try and canvas ideas, as this has reared it's head again. Summary of previous thread, having intermittent - albeit fairly regularly occurring (depending on circumstances) issues with idle racing, when the engine is hot (say been running for a while, especially...

Audi dealer con artist by Mike P[_23_]
Yet another anti-VAG rant. Friend of mine (I was servicing his missus's car yesterday) had asked me to look over his A4 last week pre-MOT. I only really did the obvious things - lights, loose things underneath, a cursory look for split bushes, visual check of brake pads , leaky exhaust. It had a split CV boot but that was all I could see. So, he took it to Audi in Woking as they had sent...

3 or 4 year MOTs? by Pete
A 'reader's letter' in my local rag today reckons that there are far more MOT failures here in britain where the test is done when a car is 3 years old, rather than in France where the first MOT is done at 4 years old. The letter can be read here (scroll to 5th letter down): http://www.lep.co.uk/news/opinion_2_1845/letters_and_emails_november_24_ 2011_1_3997965 or

Wheel arch by Charles[_4_]
Hi, Had an accident as I was driving passed a van. It reversed (gently) and caught my rears wing. The wheel arch (the lipped bit about two inches wide) has properly folded into the wing, it has multiple creases, and also got some horizontal gashing on the same area as I was moving forward (the wheel was caught etc) ... some gentle rippling on the wing. Car is SAAB 9-5, 4 door, 3 years...

7 seater car? by David Bowman
Current vehicle is a 206SW which is now 6 years old and has behaved impeccably. Any recommendations for a 7 seater estate? Either petrol or diesel. Smallish engine and low road tax. Up to two years old.

Mileage calculator for Rover 75 Instrument Pack by marpate1
Hi all, My Rover 75 has the dreaded 999999 mileage error and I'd like to have an attempt at fixing it - but to do so, I need someone who has some mileage calculation software to do me a little favour. The mileage on these cars is stored in 2 places ... on an eeprom in the instrument pack and in the LSM (Light Switch Module). Now, if the mileage on the Instrument Pack is less than 250km, then it

Focus Engine Warning Light by John Weale
Ford Focus 1.6 XL 04 Mk1 The engine warning light came on but no effect on performance noticed while driving home. I disconnected the battery for about 10 seconds then reconnected it which seemed to fix the fault. A few weeks later it came on again so I did the same. The fault indication has recurred at varying intervals during the last 6 months with the same fix carried out but I would like a...

New Mot Form by Tim[_8_]
A friend had her car mot done by a local chain Nationwide and they listed a whole load of stuff as advisory items that were nothing to do with the mot..more of a general condition report. Subsequently she will have difficulty marketing the car with all this negative remarks showing. Tinted front glass (Manufacturesr standard) drip from gearbox, etc etc. Surely they are only allowed to mention...

Hot air pipe(?) - Pug 106 by Mark
I have a split pipe on my Pug 106, it is a hot air feed to the ail filter. I didn't know there was one! There is a cold air intake, a "flap" in the pipe which the hot air line connects to, then to the carb via the air filter. Picture attached. http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/374371_10150449822992603_556222602_10310139_261240367_n.jpg I want to replace it, but I am not sure what...

fault code reader/clearer by John[_28_]
Does anyone know of any low cost handheld code readers that can also clear fault codes after you've serviced your car? Its a bit of a PITA for me because I dont have a laptop so cant use my elm327 easily without having to take my massive tower-pc closer to the car.

Mondeo - Rusty engine by Chris Howard[_2_]
Hello, Went to look at a 2007 Mondeo Diesel at a car supermarket yesterday with a mate of mine. I had a look under the bonnet and removed the plastic engine cover and found the engine, and most of the other ferrous items, to have quite a bit of rust. - see https://plus.google.com/u/1/photos/117215989244776385026/albums/5674262364625954145
