2003 Ford KA Front spring replacement, Knocking problem by Kirky
The Front coil spring had snapped on my partners 2003 Ford Ka so to save her some money I said i'd do it myself. Everything came apart fine and went back together fine but on driving the car there is a knocking noise evident when braking, I only got upto about 10mph and it seemed to knock at regular intervals until the car stopped. It wasnt just a light knock, it was quite obvious. I'e...

GPS speedometers. by Dennis Davis
A friend has recently bought an imported Mercedes. Won't be used much, it's for "Sunday best". As an import, the car is LHD and the speedometer is in kilometres per hour, not miles per hour. It'll be rather expensive to replace the speedometer with a one that shows MPH. So he was thinking of augmenting the speedometer with a car-specific GPS speedometer that shows MPH. I don't know a...

VW Touran gaiters by Doctor D
My 2008 VW Touran 2.0 TDi DSG has been faultless until the past 2 services. At the 73,000 service it required an outer NS driveshaft gaiter, and today at the 92,000 service the inner gaiter on the same side. Is this normal? I don't drive it over rough terrain and although the mileage is quite high, it's mainly motorway. Are their gaiters made of cheese? With my tongue only slightly in my...

unofficial policy regarding speeding by john east
Most of the traffic in the outer lanes of our motorways jigs along at over the 70 mph limit. Our understanding has been that up to 85mph you are unlikely to get a speeding ticket (local weather conditions permitting). 85 to 89mph and you are in the twilight zone, and anything above 90 you will get a ticket if spotted. A few months ago I heard something about a change of policy with regard to...

Focus rear window woes by Jeff[_8_]
As I was getting in to the car today I noticed the rear drivers window trim no looking like it was right on comparison with the otherside something was off the piece of plastic that sits in the recess and material part that pushes on the window has banded away somehow. There is also a jolt lke the glass isn't sitting tight/properly when it goes up. From past experience of a golf there were...

mk 1.5 04 1.8 focus petrol Last week my wife had the RAC come out as she had a flat tyre and was unable to losen 2 of the lugs. She mentioned it took a few goes maybe 2/3 times a months to start it so he did a battery check and it read as 12.48v "good battery" "re-charge" I've just topped up all the fluids before a long drive today and put a meter across it and its reading as 12.37v is this too...

Focus Ignition Leads by John Weale
Ford Focus 1.6 XL 04 Mk1 I posted recently about the engine warning light and was advised to purchase a fault code reader to diagnose the fault. This I did and at the next occurrence of the warning light, read code P0304 which was “Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected”. I purchased a set of Bosch spark plugs and ignition leads for a Mk 1 Focus from an on-line supplier. On changing the plugs, I found...

Insurance co knows more than me by john east
On just appying to renew my annual car insurance on line with moneysupermarket.com, when i type in the details of my car they throw up some relevant details about this car and request I change anything they say that's not correct. But i'm ignorant about what they are saying. It lists this car as having a burglar alarm called a thatcham 2. I've gone to ebay where they are selling thatcham 2...

Fuel Pump Question by Gordon H[_2_]
I read this in another group, is it correct? "I'm sure you've all heard about not running your fuel injected cars under a quarter of a tank of gas before. I've always been told its because when the tank is low on gas the build up of dirt, gums etc can get into the fuel lines. No its not! The reason they place the electric fuel punp in the gas tank is to help

Rover 25 02 1.6 poor starting by Andy Cap[_5_]
I'm increasingly convinced that the cause of non-starting on the first turn of the key times in the morning, is that there is no fuel ??? I can though, hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds, before attempting to start. If it was the cold or electrics, why having started once, would it then start reliably for the rest of the day ? It's just been in the garage and the guy can find nothing...

tyre depth: when to change by Fred[_7_]
Hi, I was always told that although the legal limit is 1.6mm, you should change your tyres at 3mm. I have measured my tyres and the front are 3mm on one side and 4mm on the other, so I guess it is time to change. I'm not sure what to do about the back. They are 5mm and 6mm. That seems a bit too soon to change but I was thinking about buying winter

Looking to make sure I'm buying a good quality oil filter for a Toyota. But as usual Toyota parts seem quite expensive. Is it worth getting a Toyota oil filter, or are there equally good makes out there at a better price?.

Hi, I wondered if anyone had used autoglym custom wheel cleaner http://www.autoglym.com/enGB/product-proddetail.asp?v06VQ=HM&Range=1 The description says it contains two brushes. Are they quite soft? I didn't want to buy a brush that would do more harm than good. TIA

How much does brake fluid circulate around the braking system? by The Revd[_4_]
Does it all basically stay where it is, or does it circulate? Hence, is the occasional syphoning out of brake fluid from the reservoir and replacing it with fresh fluid worthwhile?
