Astra clutch cable by Gareth Magennis
Hi, my Astra 1.4 clutch cable snapped this morning on a busy intersection. Managed to start in second and get to the garage next to my workplace after not quite making 3 junctions without having to stall. Great fun. Anyway, hour and a half later, its fixed, £40. Reasonable? I'm well happy anyway. The same guy fitted a front wishbone last year for the MOT (that triangular shaped thing...

Insurance claim questions (update). by T i m
Hi all, So, the Mrs had a little prang in the tidy 92 1.4i GLS 100k Astra (is it a Belmont when it has a boot?) recently and the Insurance Co rang today and said it was a write off (no real surprise there). They have offered us £375, - the £100 excess and we can keep the car for nowt extra (really just needs a wing and a headlamp bracket repairing. Already replaced the indicator lamp for £7...

tyre & wheel sizes by jscott
Does anyone know what the gearing effect would be if I changed the standard 235 - 60 -17" wheels and tyres for 235 - 55 -18" - would the reduction in profile offset the change from 17" to 18" wheels? thanks

How do you disable the alarm on a 97 Metro? by Merryterry
A neighbour has a door lock/alarm problem on her 97 Metro. She hopes to get it fixed when she returns from holiday. She does not want the alarm going off whilst no one is at home. Is there any way of disabling it or would disconnecting the battery be the best way?

New Mondeo TDCI clutch at 38k by Peter Balcombe
My Jan 2006 registered Mondeo TDCI 130 needs a new clutch at 38,000 and unless examination shows a fault it will cost me £576 despite there still be 3+ months of warranty to run. This is ridiculous at the age of 62 with 40 years of driving many different cars I have never had clutch problems in my cars before. Methinks I was right during most of those years to avoid Ford! Drivers could face £20 fine for leaving engines running in traffic jams by reg[_4_]
Motorists could face £20 spot fines if they leave their engines running while stuck in traffic. Traffic wardens will be able to issue the penalties - after a warning - in a bid to cut down on pollution. A pilot scheme is due to be launched in January in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, and will be expanded if it proves successful. West Sussex Council said it would target areas where exhaust...

MOT for driver? by Mark
MOT for vehicle, so why not same for driver? I would guess that most accidents are down to driver error, incompetence or bad habbits. So why all the focus on the car and zero on the driver?

Lambda sensors by Mrcheerful
The usual failure mode is that the car runs rich. But can they fail to make it run weak? I have a regular customer with an old cavalier 1,8 injection (single cam engine) I see the car every year for a service and MoT, for the last few years it has had a splashy misfire at low speed, which has very little effect on driving it, and he doesn't find it a problem, so I have just ignored...

Ford Ka (06) sparkplugs by RJ[_2_]
Hi, i'm having trouble obtaining spark plugs for a 2006 reg Ford Ka. Halfords catalogue says they are NGK TR5B-13 or Bosch +57 but the 2 stores i've been to have none in stock and say they might not be able to obtain them for some reason. My local car spares shop says he could get some Bosch Super Plus HR8 MCV +39 which would do but i'm scared he's just trying to push me off with any he...

My daughter has a 1989 Nissan Sunny 1.6 GS. It has developed an electrical fault, whereby when the headlights are dipped, the nearside headlight does not light, and there is a regular clicking sound from the engine compartment. Rover SD1 Vitesse fuel pump. by Mike G[_2_]
Need a new fuel pump for my '85 SD1 Vitesse. Rimmer Bros want £132.19 inc VAT, ex postage so about £142.00 total. Looks like I can get a suitable pump from:- http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/ For £94.88 inc VAT & postage. A saving of around £48.00. I've never dealt with the Co before, but is there any reason why I shouldn't buy from them? Poor reputation, quality of products

Saga of the Knocking Fiesta - Part V (The Final Curtain ... ) by Arfa Daily
Well, never let it be said by anyone that if nothing else, I am not at least honest. All of the good people on here who had their doubts as to whether a re-shelling of the big ends was going to get it a few more month's life, were right. It hasn't lasted and is back knocking again. Still, at least it only cost me a few quid to find out. I really don't think that it is worth messing about...

Replacement Low Beam Bulb for Mazda 6 by TheScullster
Hi all I have googled this and notice that it seems a right fanny of a job. Some suggest that it is just possible without removing the mud-guard i.e. working from inside the bonnet with a mirror rather than from via the wheel arch. My question relates to the bulb type... The owners manual appears to refer to either a Xenon Fusion 35W or a Halogen 55W. How am I supposed to know which is fitted...

Will Megane jack be the same as Laguna's?! by Lobster
I need to replace the jack on my old Renault Laguna; looking on ebay I've found the following (for a Megane) which looks the same as my old one - can I assume it is? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260291590418&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm38%26_nkw%3D260291590418%2B%2B%26_fvi%3D1 (I'd rather get a replacement Renault one rather than...
