Brake noise from Primera P11 1998 by Bluefrog
Every now and then - usually on the motorway - my Primera's left front brake starts making a kind of scraping/clicking noise as if somethings caught. Today I pulled off to the services and the front wheel and hub was pretty hot as if the brake had been binding. After starting off again it was ok and has been ever since! Checked a couple of times and no more noise. Anyone have experience of...

Peugeot 306 1.4 Spark Plugs/Service tools by Mike P
I've offered to service a friends Pug 306 for her later this afternoon. It's an R-plate 1.4 model. Brakes and fluid were done a few weeks ago so a quick check over will do. It's years since I was under the bonnet of one so I have three questions - 1.How accessible are the plugs, and will I need extensions to reach them? 2. What sort of tool is needed for the drain plug? 3. Where's the fuel...

How much? by Mrcheerful
A friend of a friend put his very new BMW (something or other big) in for a service and replace one door mirror. He already knew that the mirror was going to cost him £984 all in (boggle) The final total bill was £4500 as he also had to have two sensors (possibly lambda sensors) which were not covered under warranty (boggle2)

Brakes pulling to the nearside. by john east
1994 Corolla, the first time for us with it on the motorway and when having to break a bit sharpish, it wants to pull to the left (nearside). Not serious but still enough to be disconcerting. The tyres are all with plenty of tread. The tyre pressures all a tiny bit over 2.2 bar except the offside front which is spot on 2.2 bar. All the tyres are Bridgestone except the rear nearside which is...

Intermittent high / fast idle? by Lester Burnham
Any tips or help on this appreciated. Recently acquired Kia Carens (first registered December 03) 1.8 petrol - hey it was cheap and it's very practical. 60k miles on the clock, looks quite well looked after. Serviced well, and oil and other fluids recent, and look to be at the correct level(s). I had the cambelt and tensioner changed a few days back. I have an issue with idle speed being quite...

Insurance. by Dave Plowman (News)
Heard a spokesman on the radio this morning complaining that car insurance hasn't been profitable for 16 years. Hence the massive hikes in premiums. Perhaps if they'd have looked after decent existing customers instead of going all out for new business, they'd not have got themselves in such a state. I have no sympathy at all for them. If any increases kept roughly with inflation, few would...

Wheel hubs/bearings/knuckles? by paulfoel
Recently had a problem with my Kia Sedona. Wheel bearing needed replacing... Garage at the time (I was away on holidays) managed to do it but said hub was also worn and needed replacing soon. They'd been able to refit the bearing but if I didnt sort it out then it would wear again. Spoke to Kia and they think garage might have meant knuckle rather than hub. Confused now. Can someone explain...

Some petrol is better than others? by john britain
It was mentioned recently in this group, the opinion that branded petrol (ie shell, BP, esso etc) was better than the supermarket brands. To the extent that it could be detected in the better running of certain engines. I would have thought that there were all sorts of trading standards coming into play here. Surely petrol cannot just end up without some sort of eye being kept on the quality...

Core shift - any redress? by Peter Hill
Should a block get holes in the bore 3K miles after being re-bored to max makers service oversize? Std 83mm, bored to 84mm. 20 year old block. As it was made like that, is there any way to claim from the engine block maker? Or is it just something that happens and you have to accept it? http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/3821/motorkapot7.jpg --

What's the logic? by Newshound
Just acquired a Suzuki Carry 1.3 van on a 54 plate. The handbook says only jump start, don't push or tow start because of risk of damage to the cat. OK, I can see that if you towed it a long way before it fired you could flood the cat with petrol. Or if you were tow starting with a completely dead battery you might not have enough volts to run the ECU, etc. But surely a short push or tow...

Which car battery is best? by Fred[_10_]
Car is a 52-plate Nissan Maxima QX (A33) 3.0SE Plus Auto that we intend to keep until it dies a natural death so if the higher priced battery is better I'll go for that because it's not a 'bung a cheapie on and sell the car' situation. Just looking at the website of a shop local to me and it comes up with a choice of four batteries for our car: Exide Premium 096 @ £89.95 Varta Blue Dynamic...

Corsa - No Compression in Cylinder 3 by rsp2011
So earlier today my car was shuddering when driving and kept breaking down so I took it to a garage and after leaving it there for an hour or two, their conclusion was that there is no compression in cylinder 3. The garage said it would be around £500 to fix. I am no car expert therefore I'm looking around on the internet for some advice on what to do next. The car is a 2001 SXi Corsa with...
