antifreeze: blucol, car plan by Stephen
Hello, I had not realised that Car Plan and Blue Col were owned by the same people. Does this mean that their antifreezes are the same product and only the label on the bottle is different? The disadvantage with the blue car plan is that it needs changing every two years but it does say on the bottle you can dilute it to 25%, 33%, or 50% mixtures depending on the protection required....

brake fluid testers and bf renewal by Stephen
Hello, I see that Sealey and Gunson and others make these brake fluid testers that have three LEDs that light up depending on the condition of your brake fluid. Are they any good or are they just another gimmick to part a fool from his money? I was reading the Haynes manual (Ford Fiesta) and it recommends changing the brake fluid every few years. I've never done that before. It mentions not...

polisher by Stephen
Hello, I tried to be helpful and scrape the snow of SWMBO's car. I used a window scraper and after finishing the windows, thought I would use the scraper to lightly flick the snow from off the bonnet, wings, boot, etc. The problem is, I seem to have slightly scratched the paint and I am in trouble! They aren't deep scratches, they haven't broken the surface of the paint and you can't feel them...

Halfords prices by Dave Baker
Being in the trade, or at least until retiring recently, I've never used the place because anything I needed for my own cars arrived in a van from trade suppliers. I guess I've been spoiled compared to what Joe public has to pay for car parts. However as most of my trade contacts are no longer used I popped into Halfords the other day to get a rear wiper blade for the Focus. I was expecting...

Burnt out dizzy cap. by Dave Plowman (News)
Had problems starting the old SD1 so decided to take a look. The distributor cap was burnt round the centre electrode - and the carbon brush stuck or worn down to nothing. It's a Mallory Unalite and has only done a few thousand miles. A new cap sorted things. Any guesses what caused this? -- *Why is it called tourist season if we can't shoot at them? Dave Plowman ...

Aircon bearings by shazzbat
My daughter's pug 206 has knackered bearings on the a/c compressor. Is it possible to change these in situ, ie without discharging the system, and are the bearings or a hub available? And it seems from a preliminary exploration that the nut on the end is 1/4" W, is that correct? TIA Steve -- Never shake the ketchup bottle. None'll come, and then a lot'll

Ball Joints - Pattern Part Quality Issues by Tom Burton
Does the panel have any views on the quality of pattern part brands, as opposed to OEM. Following last years MOT in July i noticed the usuall knocking of a bottom arm knackard ball joint, so i toddled of to the local motorfactors (General Traffic) and aquired myself a new one, and fitted it with some swear words. I suspect the one i took off was the original of 2003 vintage and Circa...

Hi, The back window of my Ford Puma is covered in condensation; buckets of it. How is all this moisture getting into the car? Is there a seal or something I should be checking? Thanks, Stephen.

Beringo Electrical Weirdness by Ian P
In the process of trying to fix my windscreen washers I noticed something today that I was not aware of. The windscreen wipers (and presumably other ancillary items) only work when the engine is actually running, in other words if I just turn the key to the ignition 'on' position nothing works, if I turn further and start the engine all is OK. However if I switch off and back on again the...
