Default Stilson socket thingy

There are two 14mm nuts on captive bolts holding the front part of my
exhaust to the centre part. One I undid with stilsons after trying every
other tool I have, but the other is rounding off nicely. There's not much
room for a hacksaw and the stilsons are working the wrong way round IYSWIM.

ISTR a socket which tightens onto the nut/bolt just like stilsons so a) Do
they work? b) What are they called?

Si

If you're thinking of those with the spring loaded rods to fit any size
nut, they're not much use on a tight one.

That looks like it'll do the job. Thanks, Duncan.

Angle grinder and then replace the captive bolt by drilling it out.

If you have a Dremel, you could try a cutting disc to cut a new pair
of flats at a suitable angle for an open-ended spanner.

Handy for bolts with square heads though.

the ones he needs have a sort of coarse reverse thread inside. I have a set
but have never actually used them! 99.9 per cent of bolts and nuts can be
undone using either good sockets/spanners or mole grips, sometimes with the
persuasion of heat ! the remaining 0.1 succumb to breaking off
/grinding/chiseling/drilling as needed.
