Hi To All Is it just me, I have never known so many road springs to break. On All makes of Cars. This year I have replaced 7 ,Last year 27, 5 years ago ZERO. I know we all say pot holes but is that the answer to the spring breaking or is it more material's mike d ****ed roads. The pothole reports I file on a regular basis are now: Location: Starts at Driffield, finishes at Bridlington. The A614 on East Yorks is so bad that a recent test showed that if the driver was working for a company and experiencing the levels of impact and vibration similar to driving down that road that the company would be breaking H&S rules. Recent council pothole repairs have merely served to turn a 2" deep hole into a 2" high lump. -- Conor I'm not prejudiced. I hate everybody equally. |

Does said company set a minimum speed limit for their drivers then? |

"Duncan Wood" gurgled happily, sounding much like
they were saying: The side roads round here in London are now full of holes - after the frosts I suppose. Including some recently resurfaced ones. Wonder how they cope in countries much colder than this? Fewer freeze thaw cycles. ....and better quality repairs. It really is noticable around us that the failures of the surface are at the edges of patches, joins between tarmac sections, and other places where the surface is not contiguous. |

Subject was covered on the One Show last night, and they urged people to report all potholes to the local authority hotlines. In their test case, the reporter did so, and it was repaired next day. No surprise there. The only time it happened quickly in this area was when a young lad came off his scooter on a bend. I think he was killed because the cops investigation said "Accident caused by taking the wrong line at a bend". The parents weren't satisfied, saying that the pothole made it impossible to take the correct line, and threatened a claim. The council sent out a flying squad of pothole fillers throughout the area within days. Too late for one youngster... - Gordon H Remove "invalid" to reply |

I know we all say pot holes but is that the answer to the spring breaking or is it more material's mike d In my driving career, I have had three break. Two cart type springs in the dim and distant, plus one coil about 15 years ago. The later was just the last part of the bottom turn and went un noticed for several days, the only sign was a graunch noise on tight turns. None at all since the introduction of speed bumps etc.. -- Regards, Harry (M1BYT) (L) http://www.ukradioamateur.co.uk |

Dave Plowman (News) has brought this to us :
In article , Gordon H wrote: My last experience of a broken spring was on my dad's 1936 Morris 8, which he had overloaded with a home made "boot" box on the rear, to take us from Manchester to Poole on holiday around 1948. Hit a verge somewhere in the Midlands and a leaf broke on the NS rear. He was fortunate that the friends we were staying with new a repair shop which fitted a new leaf. In those days leaf springs could be repaired by any blacksmith. Who would also re-set them to the correct height. I dunno if coil springs could be repaired - but it's cheaper just to replace them anyway. The only way to repair a leaf spring is to replace the broken leaf and rebuild it. There is no way to repair a broken coil spring other than replace the complete spring. -- Regards, Harry (M1BYT) (L) http://www.ukradioamateur.co.uk |
