Default Importing a French-registered car

Is there any problem with buying a new car in France which is already
registered in France, driving it home then re-registering here? Or is there
a block on foreigners actually owning a French-registered vehicle?

Your question is not clear! Are you French presently living in the UK?

No, I'm British, living in the UK. Looking at options for importing from
mainland Europe.

Some manufacturers will only sell a RHD model through their UK
dealers, forces abroad are an exception. I believe as long as VAT has
already been paid there should not be a problem other than seeing that
it meets UK spec.

Please leave some feed back for others should you go ahead.

I'm still looking at all the options. It's a bit of a minefield. I know I
can get dealers who can supply imports to UK spec, but one of the reasons
that I'm interested in import options is that each country seems to have
its own set of options (must make it very confusing in the factories!).
This does have an advantage sometimes in that certain options I'd like are
available separately, whereas in the UK specs you sometimes have to get
them bundled with other options you don't want.

I wasn't looking at an RHD model in that instance; just buying a car that
would be in a French showroom. The only spec it has to meet is the headlamp
settings.

If you're happy to have a cack-hander, then, it will indeed need RHD lights
(and probably rear fog switching to RHS) - but it'll also need an MPH
speedo.

It needs a speedo 'capable of displaying mph'. As the car (Picasso) has an
electronic dash that isn't a problem. I have the current one set to km/h
anyway.
