Default Hard to start if first fire missed.

This problem has been a feature of the OMVL system fitted to a Ford V8 I
own. If you miss the first 'kick', then you have to crank the engine as if
to clear out an over-rich situation. The same thing applies if the engine is
turned off, and then attempted to start before 5 mins have elapsed.
The system has been tuned many times by the original fitter mechanic. He
says its normal, and the owners handbook says hold the throttle to the floor
(on hot starts) which I do,..but it takes 5 secs of cranking which wears the
starter out.

The ignition has been replaced with a solid-state unit which delivers a
healthy blue spark. Is this normal for OMVL equipment?

thanks,..Jason

We talking firing up on LPG? If you have a switch to cut the LPG manually,
and supply no fuel at all, then switching that off and then cranking will
clear a rich situation if that's what it is nice and quickly.

normal for LPG - you need good sparks, so if the existing ignition is in any
way feeble, then it gets upgraded.

Fair enough. Thanks for the answers. I'll report back on the gas-cut way of
turning the engine off.

I tried cutting the gas with the gas/petrol switch and it made the situation
much better. It's not as good as a cold start where you catch the first fire
(this takes judicous application of the throttle at the instant it fires),
but its much better. A great tip,..thanks.

As a side comment on the OMVL setup fitted to the 5.8L Cleveland Ford
V8,.the installation gives good low down performance, but if you are at
highway or motorway speed, pushing the throttle down to open the 2 secondry
carby barrels, there is only a slight change in performance. The convertor
is rated to 250hp, but that is not reflected in performance of the motor. On
petrol, the secondries work well.

After 6 years of persisting with this setup, plus the increased availability
of LPG pump outlets (most service stations have one or two), a dedicated gas
carby is the next thing I'll try.

thanks again,..Jason

The first thing you need to check is your starter motor and battery setup if
turning over for more than 5 seconds is giving you problems.

I had a similar problem on my Honda Accord. Turned out to be valve
clearances being too small. I reset the tappits and then installed a
flashlube kit and it ran like a dream.
