Hi,
I've just purchased a VW Camper van and it is fitted with LPG. Trouble is it
doesn't work, and despite experience with other LPG kits I can't seem to get
this one working! It appears to be BRC equipment (at least the
switch/control and vaporise both are). The Switch unit says BRC Bristol 41!
Unfortunately the previous owner has given me no information! The vehicle it
is fitted to is a standard 1973 VW Camper van with stock 1600 engine and
single carb. Now to the problems:
1) When switching to LPG all the unit does is buzz and does not seem to
switch off the petrol side. If you put switch in middle position and turn
ignition off then on again then LPG and petrol both stay off. If you then
switch to LPG when carb is empty of petrol, the switch unit appears to work
correctly until engine stalls, when it switches back to petrol and LPG
together and buzzes again. This does not appear to be right to me but I've
no wiring diagram or opperating instructions so can't check the wiring and
check I'm using it correctly! I've installed LPG kits before and never come
accross this sort of problem. Any advice or instructions greatfully
received!
2) When I finally got it switched to LPG with the carb empty of petrol I
could only get it to run with the max flow screw (in gas line from vaporiser
to mixer) screwed right down. Any other position and the engine would just
not start or run. The brass adjuster screw on vaporiser makes little or no
difference, and the recessed allen screw (which was set to 7.5 turns out -
don't have a clue what the setting should be for this) also little or no
difference. I tried removing the black plastic screw in plug on the bottom
of the vaporiser (what is this for?) and this made a bit of difference - I
could at last turn the max flow screw out slightly before stalling! At least
the vehicle was drivable without the black plug but still considerably
lacking in power. What I need is some idea on how to set this system up from
scratch and any ideas for a solution to this problem, trouble is I've no
idea what the previous owner has done to it!
Sorry for the long post but I've tried to be as specific as possible with
the faults and my attempts to rectify them! I hope to get it sorted before
too long, I'm not used to buying petrol! As I said, i've got experience of
LPG kits and vehicles but this is my first time on the air-cooled scene!
Thanks in advance,
Tom
