Selling reg. no - yes or no? by
Del The Obscure
Hi all,
A friend has a classic car which he's been using daily but is now
really in need of a resto, which he can't afford. For the last month,
it's been sitting on his driveway.
A passer-by saw it and wanted to buy the reg. from him and offered
what my friend thought was *way* more than the car is worth. He's now
in a bit of a dilemma.
Does he sell the reg., thus removing a chunk of it's...

Ford Capri 2.0 Auto to manual conversion. by
Conor
I've got a 2L MK3 Ford Capri Laser that I want to convert from auto to
manual.
I'm taking everything I need off the manual i.e speedo, cables,
pedalbox, prop, gearbox X member, centre console trim etc.
The only thing I'm unsure about is the spigot bearing on the autoboxed
engine crankshaft. I know there's been issues on other makes of car
where the hole for the spigot bearing was either...

Spitfire Mark 3 Hard Top seals by
Olp1e
I'm renovating my hardtop but am not sure how all the seals should fit.
I've got a neoprene rubber seal with an H cross-section. Is this the
weatherseal for the roof to the deck panel? If so, what is the best
adhesive - Bostick and Araldite are useless, especially because the fit
between the seal and the roof is extremely tight.
THe official parts catalogue also describes a 'sealing rubber -...

Mini mph/rpm by
Stuffed
I can't remember the exact figure, but I though the later Minis on 12"
wheels with teh 3.1 diff did about 20mph per 1000rpm?
Only, either the thing I have got is very quick (for a 998cc!), or the
speedo's very optimistic, I'm trying to work out which!
It's an 87 Mayfair, so should have the longer diff, and seems to going by
the red line in lower gears (31mph in first)...
Anyone got a reference...

Spridget rear main bearing oil seal by
Les Rose
Does anyone have experience of fitting one of these? Which make is
recommended? There's one from Moss, and Mini Spares did one IIRC.

Oil weeping by
Roy Hammond
Anybody with experience using an engine oil additive for sealing slight
leaks (eg Redex Stop Oil Leak)?
My 1996 Golf 2litre (2E) engine has a small seepage of oil from a small area
of the head gasket on the left side of the engine. It's very slight - more
an annoyance than anything else, but I don't want it to become worse.
Will such an additive work? Are there any drawbacks?
Any thoughts...

Oil leaking/seeping/weeping/oozing by
Roy Hammond
Many thanks for all your replies. Reading all you say, I think my best
option is to do nothing: the leak's too trivial (per what Neil Ramsey says).
Unless, of course the leak intensifies - then the expense of a gasket change
becomes sensible.
In my case the most likely explanation for the very slight (virtually
immeasurable) amount of oil showing, is one given by dilbert - it's caused
by stress...

Insurance Costs! by
Stuffed
Not looking for an insurance company, just wondered why on earth an 87 Mini
Mayfair 998cc is twice as much to insure as a 1975 Triumph 1500TC
automatic??
I pay about 80 quid fully comp for the Triumph, so howcome the same vcompany
has just quoted me £140 for a flipping Mini? That sounds high for a normal
policy for someone who's had a license 10 years, let alone a 3k miles a year
classic...

LED lightbulb replacement? by
jaap
I think it was in the February edition of Classic and Sportscar that I
saw LED replacements for car lightbulbs. They cost around £ 41.00 per
pair, I think. Does anyone have the contact details?
Many thanks!

MGC/TR6 wire wheels by
TVS
I'm looking for a pair of MGC wire wheels but I've been offered a good pair
from a TR6. I believe these have the same type of spline but I'm not 100%
sure? Apart from this, are there any differences with offset? Thanks! Toby

On the hunt by
MrT
The "it's about time I bought another classic as I haven't bought one for at
least four months" bug has reared its ugly head again!
So...
.... anyone know of a Ford Corsair, or something pre '73 and American, or pre
'73 and a bit interesting (Renault Dauphine, etc) for sale?
It must be up and running, and preferably with a fair amount of MOT. Only
looking for something fairly cheap.

Help needed, Shipping from USA by
dixie
Anyone help me with shipping from the US?
I have agreed to purchase a pair of secondhand front wings for a Triumph
TR4.
The problem is that according to the seller in the US they are too big to
send by United States Postal Service. This I fail to understand. According
to the USPS website the size limits are 60" long x 108" girth.
One wing weighs 13lbs so two wings plus packaging would not...

Gearbox Reconditioning by
SteveH
I've just picked up 2 used 'boxes for my 75, and plan to have one
reconditioned before it's put in the car.... don't fancy taking a chance
on just sticking one in, as there's a risk it will be as bad as the one
I've already got.
AFAIK, the weaknesses in this box are synchro rings and differential
bearings.
Any idea how much I'm likely to have to shell out for this work to be
done? - or is it...
