SD1 struts by Dave Plowman
The bits - or most of them - arrived from Rimmers. The workshop manual mentions a top spring insulator ring, but it's not shown in the exploded view, and on neither of mine was there any sign of one ever having been fitted - the spring was a direct fit into the top housing. The bottom housing has a rubber gasket though. It also mentions shims. I take it those were only fitted if needed? Again,...

SD1 struts by Dave Plowman
Decided it was time for new dampers and a general overhaul as there is a 'clonk' when first reversing, and again when going forwards. Got them off surprisingly easily, and have stripped one down. The gasket between the top of the spring and the housing had all but disappeared, and the metal was shiny through rubbing - but no groove to speak of. The top mounting is a ball race in a Metalastic...

Look out for "X636 VWV" by Jonathan Halsall
Sounds like a fairly common driver then. Hmm.....anyone else ever look through the rear window of the car without using mirrors? Have to in my Daimler as it doesn't have any mirrors. :-D Probably not unique among uk.rec.cars.classic posters. Jon

Smiths 1965 speedometer by Andrew Mawson
I am trying to re-assemble the trip recorder re-setting spindle on a 1965 A/H 3000. {This is the (relatively) modern spinning magnet in an aluminium cup variety rather than the older mechanically averaging type} The spindle fitting seems fairly obvious until I realise that the nylon cog that it carries cannot engage with the bit of the trip recorder that it needs to in any permutation or...

Herald wiring questions. by Nick
2 questions regarding 13/60 Herald wiring. 1) Where do the rear light wires go at the dashboard. There are 4 wires (part from the live, which I think I am OK on !). Colours : Green/Black, Green/purple, Green/red, Green/white. 2) Wiring to the 'J'-type overdrive : 4 wires from the plastic push-connector, 2 red/white (joined together at the connector) and 2 green/red wires (are these for...

Austin Healey 3000 MK2A British Racing Green 1963 23,500 miles. Series BJ7; 2 plus 2, 60 spoke chrome wire wheels, tonneau cover, four speed gear box with overdrive gear. This car has a special provenance in that it was the very last complete MKllA off the production line, hence they painted it BRG, not a normal colour for the Mkll, to mark the occasion. Runs beautifully and has all bills,...

Retro car radios? by Andrew Mawson
I want to fit a radio in a 1965 Austin Healey 3000, but don't want something out of keeping with the era. Does anyone know of outfits selling retro looking car radios that are up to reasonably modern specs - (ie FM preferably) Regards, Andrew Mawson
