Dismantling 3 series BMW by
Willy Eckerslyke
Sorry, slightly off topic here though it could arguably have been a
future classic. I'm currently scrapping a 100,000 mile 1990 BMW 316i Lux
written off due to flood damage and just want to check I'm not wasting
anything with potential value. I've stripped it down to rolling wreck
status with the intention of listing all the bits on Ebay after
Christmas and towing the remains to the scrap...

Brand New 0 miles Mk4 Escort for Museum ??? by
Lee Griffiths
We have a brand new never registered, 0 miles (I think) mark 4 Escort
that was given us by Ford for engineering teaching. It is perfect.
It has to go and management want to simply crush it! or cut it in half
arghh!
It cannot be sold as it was a gift, but it should be in a museum
Any suggestions ?

BMC A-series main bearing strap by
Asolepius
I have bought a steel strap for my 998 Sprite engine, and had the cap
machined flat of course. But the oil pick-up pipe is mounted via a bracket
which is fixed to the original centre cap. I'm reluctant to drill and tap
the strap - rather defeats the purpose of extra strength. Any siggestoions
for bracing the pipe? The strap came from Mini Spares and of course they
don't have any truck with...

Micra Engine Replacement by
Ian
OK, I know it's not a classic but I used to get a lot of helpful answers
when I had the P6 so I thought I'd try here first.
It's a 1990 Micra with 107K on the clock and 12 months MOT. The timing belt
threw it's hand in and I'm quoted £400 to fix it. Obviously that's a non
starter as the car's not worth it. "Experts" in the pub suggested a
replacement engine. I can get one for £150 with a 3 month...

Pacific DVD 1002 MK2 Problems by
Mike P
Got a Pacific DVD player from Asda last week. It played a couple of DVDs OK,
but not another I bought.
So I took it back as all my dvds play OK on the PC, all are R2 originals.
Now I'm getting a bit frustrated
as I'm now on the 3rd player in a week and it's really picky about what it
plays.
SHould I just get it refunded - and if yes, what shall I buy? Or should I
risk yet another.?

Photoblocker is a revolutionary number plate spray commononly used in
the USA for protection against roadside photo flash speed cameras such
as the common GATSO type. It's Invisible to the naked eye. Just spray
onto your number plate, leave to dry and no more flash camera tickets.
Only you will know Photoblocker is on your vehicle! PhotoBlockers

Rivetting Brake Linings by
Paul
I need to fit new linings to all the shoes. I assume this is pretty easy:
1) Start from centre
2) Firmly clamp lining to shoe and insert rivet
3) Put a steel drift/punch in a vice
4) Place rivet over drift, and use the ball of a ball-peen hammer to secure rivet.
Is there anything I've missed, please?
Thanks.

Odd intermittent electrical fault by
Jim Warren
The last couple of times I have gone out in my Triumph 2000 it has died on
me, but has restarted after half a dozen goes at the starter.
The first time I was driving along, and about a mile from the initial cold
start, when the temperature gauge had started to climb off the cold mark,
and the engine just cut out. I had enough momentum to get to the side of
the road, and after it restarted, I...

rover p6: fiction? by
rill2@verwijderdit.nl
Hi,
Just the other day I was talking to a ancient Rover specialist over
here, because I was/am (?) interested in a 2200 tc ('75) model I was
offered...
He told me **not** to invest any money in a 4-cylinder P6, but to
point to a V8 model...
He said there are serious problems with the 4-cylinder engines and
their parts supply.
Engines and gearboxes were *very* problematic.

aluminium welding - cylinder head by
Simon Birkby
I'm going to need an aluminium cylinder head (elderly bmw525) crack-
tested, checked for true (flatness) and possibly welded up if it is
actually cracked. Can anyone recommend a firm that can do this
kind of work? Ideally somewhere near Woking in Surrey?

Why (strangely) I quite like London by
Adrian
Yesterday, walking from Marylebone to Baker St with about 5000 other
commuters.
At a set of lights, a VERY lovely silver Alvis TD21.
Two seconds later, at another set of lights, an even more gorgeous Park
Ward (I think) Bentley Continental (a real one, not a VW)
These people may live in another world financially to me, but - by god -
they have their hearts in the right place...

Exchange rates by
Willy Eckerslyke
I've been contemplating an Aldon Ignitor for the Vitesse, but was put
off by the price - around 95 pounds including p&p. However I've just
discovered the same unit labelled Pertronix and bought from the US will
cost 47 pounds.
Now just need to see how much I get stung on the duty...
