Vintage diesel swaps-do any survive? by
Accessory Section 8
In the UK there were people putting various diesel engines in various
cars in the 50's, 60's and 70's-do any of these conversions still exist
and run regularly? I think they had all sorts of interesting odd(
outside their native land) engines, like Gardners, Fodens, and whatnot.

About DVLA by
mrcheerful .
I was surprised to get a letter from DVLA this morning, they say that
someone has applied for a log book for a car of mine and is that all right?
The car is in a garage remote from my house, someone has angle ground the
three locks off. The car is still there and intact and someone has replaced
one lock.
The letter from the DVLA says that if they don't hear from me they will
assume it is...

Brake switch replacement- help please by
Jonathan
I need to replace the brake pressure switch on a morris 1000. I seem to
recall somewhere reading that if the front of the car is elevated then
the switch can be replace without bleeding the system. I would be very
grateful for advice as to whether this is a practical and safe short
cut or a dangerous false recollection.
Many thanks
Jonathan

Vehicle LIcense by
pauls@zetnet.co.uk
Hi,
I have a pre 1960 MG. When I got it, there was a 1997 'tax disc'. I
understand that the 'tax' is free, but I can't find anything on the
DVLA site.
Can someone tell me what I need to do to be legal please? Apply for a
normal disc?
Thanks.

Vertical master cylinder a bad idea? by
Willy Eckerslyke
Purists look away now...
I'm just sorting the brakes on my split-screen Minor and have decided on
a modification to get rid of the combined master cylinder and reservoir
hidden in the chassis rail. It'll be fully reversible if anyone wants to
convert back in the future.
I intend to use a Landrover Series 3 master cylinder and reservoir.
These are seperate and don't have a servo.
The neatest...

Number plates by
Dave Plowman (News)
Decided to finish off the SD1 with a new front number plate. The old one
had a chunk missing - courtesy of next door's Audi tow bar. But still
legal. It was from Halfords, so I went back there for a new one, and took
the old one so they could match the style. Whatever anyone says about
them, they've got a car park.;-)
Eventually, in a quiet store, I got an assistant to actually assist. I had
my...

Importing from Guernsey & VAT by
Adrian
Sanity check, please :-
If somebody were contemplating importing a '60s EU-built car from a private
seller in Guernsey, there wouldn't be any VAT payable on it, would there?

Master cylinder problems by
Ian Johnston
Hi Folks,
A friend gave me a lift in his Morris Oxford series MO a couple of
days ago. Lovely solid thing, but got a bit more interesting when the
foot brakes failed completely. A bit of checking when we got -
cautiously - to our destination showed a fountain of fluid coming up
the reservoir of the Lockheed master cylinder as the pedal was
pressed. A bit of fiddling and the problem went...

You have to laugh... by
Willy Eckerslyke
Ebay again, I'm afraid.
I've been thinking of fitting halogen headlamps to the Minor so had a
look at what's on offer. Standard 7" round conversion kits for Minis,
Minors, Landrovers, etc., go for about 20 quid a set.
There's even a chap doing them with a Buy-it-now price of £22.33.
Which means the guy with a set currently running at 56 pounds is doing
pretty well.
The key to his success is...

XJ6 S3 - Separating rear exhausts by
Jonathan
I (think I) need to separate the rear sections of the exhausts from the
bendy sections before them so that I can remove the IRS unit. I've
undone the bolt-together exhaust joints but it's the push-fitted join
just forward of the rear silencers I'm unsure of how to separate. I
don't want to cut the exhausts because they're stainless steel and
obviously I'd like to re-use them. Of course the XJ6...

Slightly off-topic but still useful info by
prizeclub@yahoo.co.uk
Everyday in the UK there are 1000s of free competitions, offering big
prizes such as cars, foreign holidays, even hard cash! But how do you
get to know about these competitions? (After all, if you don't know
about the competition then you cannot win the prize!).
This is where our Prize Club can help. Every day we scan 1000s of
websites, looking for details of new competitions. We then send you...
