Legalities of removing a catalyst by D. Brown
The catalytic converter in my 1991 Volvo 240 is rattling like crazy at about 2400 rpm. It's just been through its MOT and I noticed it was tested as a 'uncatalysed vehicle'. If I remove the cat, replacing it with the old fashioned centre exhaust section and silencer, would I be breaking any laws? The only online resource I have (http://www.ukmot.com/manual/appendixB.htm) doesn't really...

SS Exhaust. by Dave Plowman (News)
The heatshield on the nearside downpipes on the SDI had come adrift and was rattling. It's a Rimmer Bros SS sports system. It appeared to have pulled a spot weld out and the exhaust was blowing, so an MOT (due shortly) fail. Rimmers said it has a lifetime warranty, but wanted me to send it back for either repair or replacement. Unfortunately, my old bones ain't up to crawling around underneath...

E30 320is - worth keeping? by deadlock
I have a BMW E30 320is as a daily hack at the moment, and was wondering is it worth hanging onto when it's no longer required (soon-ish). Picked it up for silly money, really nice condition, etc., etc. Are these rare? Haven't seen any others for sale trawling the net, just the odd 318is. Wouldn't want to let this one get away if it were a "keeper", like most people I've let cars go before...

How to rebuild a water pump? (Triumph) by Willy Eckerslyke
I seem to have accumulated a few Triumph Vitesse water pumps in various states of decomposition so it seems a good idea to have a go at rebuilding one or two. Anyone know what's involved? The mechanical workshop at my workplace has a fly-press I could use. Seal kits appear to be available.

Measuring torque by Pete W
Folks, My diff pinion has to be tightened to 13 to 20 lbs in. Any clues as to an easy way to measure such a fine torque; note pounds/inch. I guess it could involve a bar and a spring balance? Pete W

What Amazon doesn't want you to know. by Margaret Shiels
Gentle uk.rec.cars.classic reader, First, my apology for cross-posting to this NG. Be assured that this is a one-off. It will never happen again. My sole purpose is to draw your attention to what I believe are dubious practices by Amazon.co.uk. I also believe that at stake here is freedom of expression. Amazon have rejected my reader review of a novel by John McGahern. In

It's time to terminate the accounts of people who abuse the usenet to insite violent & race hate That person has been posting extremely racist posts all over the newsgroups & I thing it is disgusting that he still has an account. Surely he should not be allowd to just get away it, when people go-around posting all that nasty

Ragtop recommendations for a '79 Spitfire? by S1500
I see numerous brands available, and don't know the difference between them. There's Robbins, and um, some other one. What's the most OEM-like in appearance, but what's the best overall? Mine's ripped too close to the windows in several places. Doesn't matter much I can't see much out of the crazed windows anyway. Ragtop is getting a whole overhaul since part of it scratched my window.

sheet steel by steve church
I'm buying my first MIG welder shortly in readiness for when I get my first classic. What gauge of steel do I need to practice on for things like floors and wings. I spoke to one sheet metal fabricator and he said I needed cold rolled steel but they used hot rolled. What's all that about? Steve

SD1 V8 Crankshaft pulley bolt by Liam Healy
Thsi is one of those posts that crop up weekly on the various car groups. I have a well seized Crankshaft pulley bolt, I have read the other advice elsewhere about budging it and will try the various things suggested (bar turning it over on the starter as its out of the car!). But I wanted to check that this bolt does unscrew anti-clockwise? Does anyone know?

Alternator Taxonomy by Liam Healy
Hi, I'm after a specific alternator - a Lucas A127 which is supposed be either 55 or 65 amp. I am finding a lot of alternators by other manufacturers called A127, sometimes they have higher outputs e.g. 70 amps. Would the dimensions of these be similar to the lucas ? is the A127 bit an industry standard designation?

TR7 BL workshop manual by Pete W
Has anyone got a BL workshop manual for the TR7? I don't want to buy or even borrow it, I just want to know if there is any info on dismantling and re-assembling the diff. I have a manual for the SD1 and want to check if the same info is in the TR7 version. It's for something I'm writing. But while I have your attention, does anyone out there know the part numbers of the two pinion bearings...
