Supermarket fuel by
Les Rose
This is not specifically a classic car issue, although we all want to
preserve our ancient engines as long as possible. Most Saturdays I read
Honest John's column in the Telegraph, and he's always banging on about how
supermarket petrol doesn't have any detergents in in it, causing all sorts
of problems, whereas Shell and Texaco fuels are the ones of choice. He says
it applies to diesel as well -...

Jag XJ6 S3, 3.4 - any good? by
Sean
Hello,
I've happened across a Series 3 XJ6, 3.4 for sale. How do they compare
in terms of performance and comfort to the 4.2 injection cars? Are there
any issues around the engine and carbs I should be aware of when looking
at it?
Reason I ask is because I have a 4.2 that needs some work so will be a
while off the road. I could buy the 3.4 to tootle around in for a while
and eventually sell/use...

I can see it's some variety of E-type :). Seems to have a lower windscreen /
roofline than most.

I have a piece of Austin A55 Pick-up history and I'd like to find it a

SU HIF38 question by
Les Rose
I am rebuilding my HIF38, and following Vizard's procedure for improving its
flow. The throttle plate has a big pop-off valve in it, which must be a huge
obstruction to the air stream. I have the Haynes SU manual but there's no
mention of what this valve is for. It looks as if it provides an air bleed
at idling, but I have not seen it on other SU types. Is it really necessary?

FS (spares or repair) VW Passat GL5 by
Robert Pearce
OK, so it's not a classic in many people's minds, but it's for spares or
repair and shares a lot of bits with the contemporary Audi 80 / quattro.
1983 VW Passat GL5 injection estate. Good runner, very reliable, 177000
miles, alloy wheels, PAS, C/L, electric windows. Just failed its MOT on
more things than I care to fix. £100 ono

Any distributor experts out there? by
Jim Warren
When I bought my PI 3 years ago, the previous owner had fitted a fancy rotor
arm with a governor mechanism that shorted the spark at high revs.
When I got the car, the governor operated at 4100 rpm, but over time I
imagine the springs have got tired, and this has crept down, and yesterday
it was down to 3600 rpm which is a bit too low.
I know I could just swap it for a standard rotor arm, but I...

Advice please by
Linda Murray
I have a 1981 Ford Fiesta Popluar in very reasonable condition and would
like to sell it.
It has been garaged from birth and been driven for the last 20 odd years
by my mum who is now 88 and too old to drive it.
It has MOT and TAX and a new clutch & goes like a bird.
Would it be a good idea to sell it on EBAY? If so, how much would I
expect to get for it?

LRP or additive? by
Mike P
Hi,
can't afford to have the heads on my 2.8 Capri converted to unleaded quite
yet, so I'm womdering whether it's best to use LRP or super unleaded with an
additive - Castrol Valvemaster or similar.
Can anyone offer any advice?
Cheers
