London parking ?? by John Miller
Hi all We are visiting London tomorrow (Monday), and as I don't fancy paying £20 to park in the centre, plus the dreaded congestion charge, I think I will park out of town and get the tube. We shall be coming from the west (M40 - Western Ave) and I reckon Ealing Broadway or Common would be good for us to get to and get the tube. What's the chances of finding some street parking around the...

Modern Coil on positive earth? by Bryan
I have a 1959 Hillman Minx which runs on positive earth. The car never came with a distributor cap/HT leads/coil. I've sourced a cap for the distributor (push in type leads), HT leads but I was wondering whether or not I could use a modern coil with the car. Do I have to purchase a special coil because it is positive earth? Or can I use a normal modern coil but reverse the polarity (attach the...

Clutch relining. by Horatio.
It used to be commonplace to reline a clutch plate instead of just buying a new one. Is anyone still doing this or has the practice died out? Best Horatio.

Brake master cylinder repair by Kris
Damn, the Spit 1500 tandem master cylinder has leaked over the bulkhead .. another spray job. Main problem, it leaked 'cos of a small pit in the bore. Now these tandem cylinders are nearly £200, is there anyway it can be repaired .. or is there a cheaper alternative ? Chris

Hillman Minx parts by Bryan
Hello guys, I've since managed to get myself a series 3 Hillman Minx which I hope to restore. I can't seem to find anywhere locally/nationally where I can get in touch with other owners who may have some spare parts (eg. windows). I need the following parts for my car: - Distributor cap/rotor arm and leads - Rear windscreen - Driver's side front door glass

1971 VW BEETLE FOR SALE by MICHELLE OAKLEY
Hi I have a 1971 VW Beetle for sale. She is in excellent condition and is Clementine orange. She has been fully restored (body off resto), runs well and is wonderfully shiny! She has been in my possession since I was 17 and I am now nearly 32, so I have grown up with her. The front end has been fully re-wired and there is a cigarette lighter hidden in the glovebox, even though I don't smoke I...

Engine runs backwards by Stephen
My BMC "A" series 1100 engine in my Sprite has just started running backwards when I turn it off - a few revs and smoke comes aout of the air intakes - does anyone know what causes this? There seems to be a lower suction throgh one of the carbs compared to the other. I don't know if this is related. Thanks in advance Stephen

Running in oil by Les Rose
I am about to assemble my 998 A-series and have seen highly variable advice about running in (first 500 miles). Various pundits recommend any old cheap multigrade oil, high quality multigrade, or special running in oil. What's the received wisdom?

Anti-oxidising spray - another bright idea bites the dust by Willy Eckerslyke
Those of you who remember my witterings from before Christmas will know that I was running a little experiment to see whether a spray sold to prevent photographic developer from oxidising would prevent steel from rusting. I cut two short lengths of steel bar, dunked each into sea water for half its length, allowed to dry and then sealed them in plastic tubs for a couple of weeks, one filled...

A-series block dimensions by Les Rose
Does anyone happen to know the difference in block length between small bore and big bore A-series? I need to fit a spider drive oil pump and have to make a spacer (can't find anyone who sells the spacer).

Redex Lead? by Ian Johnston
Hi Folks, My local garage has stopped doing LRP, so I bought the only lead substitute I could find locally. It's Redex Lead, and I can't see any FBHV stamp of approval on it. Anyone know if it's OK or should I chuck it away and get something else? Seems a shame to ditch it after one tankful, but if I have to ... Ian

Battery by Dave Plowman
It's new battery time for the SD1 EFI. Halfords don't list one - I would have considered one from them as they have a handy branch for me. If cost isn't an issue, what make would give the longest life - the current Lucas has only just exceeded its warranty. I think I checked with Bosch last time round and they didn't have the correct one either - it needs to be physically very close in size to...
