No oil cap = no idle. Why? by David Balfour
Hi again folks, another (hopefully straightforward) question, Whilst driving down the M1 yesterday in my Spitfire 1500, I heard the ominous sound of something falling off the car. As I was pretty much at the end of my journey anyway, I got off the motorway at Sheffield (they really need to sort out the bumps in the road) and as I approached a roundabout the car died. Upon inspection, I noticed...

Parts Shipment by Mike Himelfarb
Hi all, I purchased an O/D gearbox for my TR6 on eBay from a seller in Birmingham and have arranged transport to Canada, via container, from a firm in Colnbrook, Slough. My problem is how to get the gearbox from Birmingham to Colnbrook which, I understand, is about 60 miles. I can't ask the seller as I've already stretched his patience about a mile in taking most of the past 3 months to...

Historic Rally Monte Carlo by Alfa Romeo
Hello, does anyone have any experience with the start of the Rally Monte-Carlo Historique, starting in Reims France? I would like to go and take a look and wonder if the cars are, like at the Mille Miglia, shown in the citycenter during the day, and if there's a good spot to watch and hear the cars going by. Thanks in advance

Advice please on head bolt problem by DocDelete
Right, 1992 8 valve VW Scirocco engine - I need to get the head off for a bit of a refurb and to replace the valve stem seals. 9 of the 10 cylinder head bolts came out without a problem (using a 6 point spline key - I know I know it's got VW 12 point splines but it worked fine with one tightening "crack" then full rewind out, and absolutely no slippage). Oh, but my word, here's a surprise: one...

Screech from Clutch (Spitfire) by David Balfour
Hey again folks, Just was driving around town in my 1978 Triumph Spitfire 1500, car was cold. Tried to pull away from a roundabout (not particularly vigorously) and got a reasonably loud grating type screech from the back of the engine / clutch area. It only happened once (so I don't think it's the release bearing), but I imagine this is a sign of impending doom. As far as I know, the...

MG Midget 1500 on Ebay - Currently £340 by terzal
For sale on Ebay, finishes 22/1/04 at 1549. Vermillion colour, 94784 on clock. Taxed till end April and MOT till March 6th. Converted for unleaded. The car is presently not running and will need to be taken away on a trailer, but i would see it as a car needing some fairly minor work done to get back on the road, rather than just suitable for spares. Please see Ebay site for further details,...

Why use Twin Contact Breaker Points by David Balfour
Hi everybody, Just out of curiosity really, I was wondering what advantages there are in having two sets of contact breaker points in your distributor. I know that the early Triumph Stags had one set, but were changed to twin points during the production run. I've seen race spec distributors advertised as having two sets as well, but can't get my head round why it would be an advantage - the...

DVLA looking for more money by Des
Went to the PO today as the dvla cant seem to actually get the registration document to me (only been waiting 8 months!) and I needed another V62. They are going to withdraw all current V62 forms and start charging for lost registration docs. When did this come in? or have I been asleep for the last couple of years Des ---

I have a SORN issue by MG
I am confused with this new SORN related Tax disc issue. I have an old classic that is in permanent storage now. It was also in store prior to the original SORN introduction in '98 and as such (and according to THEIR rules) did not need a declaration as it was untaxed prior to Jan '98. Save to say its not anywhere near public highway. I have been to the Post Office and written to DVLA twice and...

Facet fuel pumps... by Jon Tilson
I have one of these on my P6 Rover V8 and its just disgraced itself by failing to work. Are these repairable or do I just have to buy a new one? It just stopped clicking...electrics are all fine to the pump. I see they come in 2 flavours...the solid state and the ones like mine...sort of brass tube thing. The solid states are a good bit cheaper. Would they be up to the job? Anyone know what...

HELP! - 33 Series 3 16v Cambelt Timing Problem by Rev. Alfa Adam
I'm in an interesting sitch - having rebuilt my 16v 33 engine I've put the engine back in and timed the cams according to the instructions on http://www.alfisti.co.uk/16v_boxer_belts.htm Since then, the engine has run on 1 & 3, but cylinders 2 & 4 won't run. Now I've thought laterally, then read the instructions several (hundred!) times and then I tried moving the belts around a bit - this...
