Tesco: An Age-Old Multicultural Problem by
Western Voice
Tesco: An Age-Old Multicultural Problem
In older England the merchant class had many easy-going traditions.
One tradition was that a respectable tradesman would never seek
business but wait for it to come to him. Another tradition was that to
decorate one's store window with lights or colors, or to display one's
stock of goods attractively in the view of the public, was a
contemptible and...

E-Type steering wheel by
Geoff Mackenzie
Does anybody happen to know if the steering wheel from a Series 1 E-'Type
(1961-1967) also fits the MK 2 saloon? Or anything else, come to that?
It's highly likely as Mr Lyons standardised across the range as far as
possible to keep costs down. The central aperture is 2.25in.

When did the classic car bug bite? by
Alistair Ross
While chatting at work (we are all petrol-heads) someone asked, "when did
the classic car bug bite". For me it was when invited to a relations wedding
(nightmare for a young lad) the best man took pity...Drove me back to the
reception in his 1932 MG J2......I was hooked, still am!!

Popular-classics forum down by
Willy Eckerslyke
First the Practical Classics website and forum went belly up (undergoing
maintenance), now the Popular-classics forum seems to have major
problems. I know a few regulars here are subscribers, so anyone know
what's going on?

road test exempt? by
nona
Hello,
The vendor of this van on Ebay claims it is road test exempt. 370001550152
Sounds unlikely somehow. Can it be?
Not thinking about buying - just curious how such an exemption might be
obtained.

High torque starter motors by
Dave Plowman (News)
Anyone have experience of these as replacements? They're permanent magnet
motors with reduction gearing - said to be a lot more efficient than the
older Lucas direct drive types.

Spot welding add-on for Arc welder? by
Adrian
Folks,
I can't weld. But I know a man who can. And he's coming over this
weekend, to shove floors/sills/lower bulkhead in the 2cv van.
Because we're putting a few new panels in, he's suggesting getting hold
of a spot welder. No prob - HSS hire one, for about £50. Except whilst it
likes 240v, it wants a bit more of it than is normally kicking about.
Like 32A of it. Which, going by HSS'...

Starter solenoid urgently wanted by
Geoff Mackenzie
I posted about this a few weeks ago.
I need a starter solenoid for a 1966 E-Type Jaguar. The Lucas part number
is 76476A. but it does not seem to be listed in any of the Lucas
catalogues. I've tried umpteen telephone calls; the nearest so far was
JagBreaker in Newcastle (they sell new parts as well) who recognised the
number and thought they could supply from stock. Turned out they...

1969 Sunbeam Alpine Arrow. Body mods by
ttynan@iol.ie
I've acquired one, an abandoned project to convert to a convertible,
along the lines of the common Morris Minor mod. Being a two-door and
with a reasonably low body line I think it looks pretty good with (so
far) just the roof chopped. Was wondering if anyone knows of such a
conversion? I am broadly familiar with the MMinor procedure regarding
stiffening and strengthenig/reinforcement to...

Number Plates - which type? by
sweller
I have a 1965 Jaguar S type - what type of number plate would have been
fitted to it originally?
Would it have had pressed aluminium or would a higher end car of that era
more likely had riveted letters, silver or white on black?
I always associated pressed aluminium with cheap cars and commercial
vehicles.
Whilst I'm on the subject I always think black number plates look very

Dating car registrations by
Adrian
Petert gurgled happily, sounding much like
they were saying:
Anyone have any idea if there is anywhere where I can date car
registration numbers? i.e. those issued before 1963 in England & Wales.
It would be helpful in dating some old photo's I have
Identifying the cars the plates are on would probably give you a close
enough date.

Advisability of driving Borg Warner without prop? by
Alex
I've got a RR 200Tdi with a BW xfer box, the front prop is ducked
(specifically it's in about 4 pieces, two of which are on the road
somewhere). I know the LT230 shouldn't be driven far/fast with the
difflock on, what about the BW box? is it likely to be affected in any
way?

Car ID by
Geoff Mackenzie
Is it possible to identfy a car by its registration number? I've tried
Google and various registration sites but no luck. The car in question is
WMC 180.
The reaon I ask is that I followed this car yesterday in Horley, and I am
intrigued to know what it was. My best guess is a Paramount, a mid-fifties
1172 Ford Special - so it may be registered as a Ford, although Paramount
were...
