Can anybody tell me if a gearbox from a Frontera lwb X22XE will fit my Frontera Sport C20NE pls?

Years ago, I was told by a LandRover employee that if you only have one pair of chains available for your 4x4, they should be fitted to the rear wheels. My local 4x4 mag has just published an article saying they should be fitted to the front (which always seemed logical to me, so you can steer, but I trusted the LR guy's expertise). Who is right? I think the RR has to go, mainly due to the fuel consumption & it is a bit on the big side for what we need, so I am looking to buy a smaller 4x4 (I HATE the term 'soft-roader'), around an 02 or 03 model, price around £8k (on ebay!).
