Mother I law's VW battery is struggling to start her golf and just about turns the engine over (even after charging). I think the battery needs replacing. She told me "the garage put a new battery in only 6 months ago". Checked the battery and it's an *old* battery. Even the cell covers have been chewed up and it obviously much more than 6 months old. Check the bills she was given and all it says...

Went out at mi-day today and the bonnet and boot were frozen .The bonnet opened after the engine had been run for a few minutes. The petrol flap eventually opened with some help. Later on at night when returning home the drivers window wouldn't go down as it was frozen . Everything eventually cleared once the car had got warm It's not a great problem but Is there anything I can do to these...

Hi All, Step daughter comes round tonight and just as she's leaving she mentions the remote fob for her car is 'getting worse'. This translates to needing more and more presses to get it to disable the immobiliser. Suspecting a bad fob battery a quick check on net suggested it's a simple thing to re-synch (3TXA fob) in the event of changing the battery so I checked the battery for her (3.05V).

What've you bought and wished you hadn't? The one that sticks out to me was my 16V MK2 Golf. The previous owner had meddled with it, which meant it did 28mpg if you drove like Dervman and the 8V that replaced it was as quick, if not quicker. And it was a stretch to buy it, and then I discovered that loads of 16V parts are twice the price of 8V parts...

Dunno why I'm thinkinkg of this now, maybe it's the Alfa talk further down: 1. Lotus Sunbeam - Insurance was an issue as I was 18 2. Alfa 33 Cloverleaf 1.7 3. 1988 Opel Manta GTE - This was one of the last, I test drove it in 1995 and it was awesome, and in really good nick. I think I didn't get it as I thought it was a bit overpriced :(

Well 2 deals are done actually. The SD1 was sold today, which is nice. So that's all all the expenditure on the Vitesse covered so far, with a few hundred quid left. Just inspired by this bit of a post of Dervy's, but thinking it warranted a separate thread..... Extra Geek Mode Now official fuel consumption figures are a bit of a nonsense really, but of the last three similar sized cars (Accord 1.8, Saab 9-3 2.2 TiD, Saab 9-3 1.8t) my average and highest mpg figures have been 110% of the official combined cycle and 122% respectively.

I bought a 206 last weekend. 1.4 on a T plate with 82K on the clock. Drove it 20 odd miles home with no problems. I've had it parked up in the drive since, as I've not taxed it yet. leartned today that 2nd hand saab 9-5s are strangely cheap. Its seems very standard toi be able to pick up a 3 year saab 9-5 diesel estate with reasonable-ish mieage (60K) for just over 5K. For a car that costs around 20K brand new (and even that possibly from a discounter) why are they so cheap? Parts? Problems? Fuel guzzling? RFL? intrigued (and potentially interested!)

Had a bit of trouble starting this thing recently. Have to turn engine about 10 times to get it to fire. Usually fires as soon as the glowplug light goes out. I've checked obvious like air in fuel line to injection pump (it has a clear section so you can look for air bubbles). I've checked resistance of all six glow plugs and they are all about 0.6 Ohms. I have a P reg Rover 216 petrol. I cannot find the thermostat. Haynes glibly says remove the bottom hose from the thermostat housing and remove the latter with two bolts. But in my case the hose comes out from the rad, goes up about 9 inches and then connects to a metal pipe that curves round to the back of the engine. Is the thermostat on the engine end of this metal pipe? I can't actually...
