At some time in the past my classic has been resprayed and finished with a clear lacquer coat. I have no experience working with this. There are numerous small scratches, mostly only through the lacquer, but a few have marked the paint. Can I spray paint on top of the lacquer, or is it likely to peel. I am looking at lots of small scratches, so may have to do two complete half- wing...

Manged to break the casting of the MIL's 1.3 M Plate escorts alternator while trying to change the belt (don't ask, I was being a little heavy handed) Lower left side mounting and just less than a1/3rd of the casting has come away. I'm looking for advice on repairing said breakage. Instant treatmant was a breakers for a replacement but price is an issue.

Aluminium bodied XJ. Good idea, or financial suicide? Not sure you had one, think you've had the X3x0 shape cars, but that's probably a fair indication of running costs. -- SteveH 'You're not a real petrolhead unless you've owned an Alfa Romeo' www.italiancar.co.uk - Ducati 750SS - Hongdou GY200

a few weeks ago i posted about the exhaust emission lght comming on. 28000 miles. a bad show by vw to say the least. anyway it turned out to be a problem with the valves which i had to have replaced as well as a head skim and all the necessary bits to go back on with it. i put it all back together and it ran fine, alot sweeter than before. the valves on these things are a weak point so please be...

Our Mondeo Mk2 has bust a spring. A helpful friend reckoned I'd be best off swapping the whole strut, which I'm now starting to question. Anyway, I picked one up from the scrapyard yesterday, then realised it was a non-ABS one, whereas the car has ABS. Top halves are the same, but lower sections differ. Scrapyard will exchange it, but want 50quid + VAT for the ABS strut (this one was 35+VAT),...

HI All Does anybody know if there's a leak-sealing product that can be used on older cars to keep the rain _outside- rather than letting it find its way _inside_ ?? My '64 Morris Traveller has one or two little places where persistent rain (which we sometimes get out here in the far South-West of Ireland!) finds its way in - particularly in & around the windscreen / bonnet area - and I...

This is a true story about a boy whose father used to manufacture idols. These idols were very popular amongst the people. Most people were worshipping them because this is what they thought the religion of their ancestor’s required. However, this lad thought differently. He began to reason with his people about their age-old practice. Why did they worship idols? Could the idols benefit them in...

Hi All, I tried to help a mate who runs a garage today by pushing the rear stub axles out through the bearings on a pair of hubs for him using my 10 tonne hydraulic press. He gave them to me to do because he felt the new hydraulic puller he recently bought (especially to do a particular customers car, a fairly new Focus) was just going to rip the wheel studs out.

I'm in the process of building a wood garage for my 1948 Vauxhall 14 and had the raft power floated to get a nice smooth surface. I intend doing the floor with floor paint but after googling "Floor Paint" I find that the majority of manufacturers don't recommend using paint on a power floated floor without etching it first. Can anyone give me the benefit of their experience before I proceed.

Just done head gasket, to clear the emissions on the MOT last month. Now my 106 1.4i V reg has developed an engine problem. She runs fine, until at a random point of say 5 miles, the engine starts running lumpy, goes to cut out. But if I keep reving it, it keeps running and clears its self. Sometimes it cuts out. When its running lumpy it gives out black smoke. Sometimes on tickover, the...

I want to sell my car (probably on ebay) but last year I had a bump in it - momentary loss of concentration saw me run into the back of a stationary car at a roundabout. It was only a low-speed bump, probably no more than about 5 to 7mph but the crumple zone did exactly what it said on the tin and the insurance paid £2,500 to repair it. The repair was done to superb standards and I certainly...

I was offered a BMW 530i Touring ('93, E34) as a deal with my MR2; I'd seen it on eBay, and it looked useful. And automatic. And RWD. And had a towbar. Friend has called me this morning, his Ka is overheating. His local garage reckons that it's the heater valve that's seized causing it. Is this possible? The rad is only getting slightly warm. I'd have thought thermostat.. There is no coolant loss and no poor running. It runs fine most of the time and has only overheated the last few days where it's been really hot and stuck in town.
