What are the best places (books or on-line) to increase my general knowledge of my VW Rabbit type engine? Background - I have raced cars (road racing SCCA type) for a fair time. I currently have in my +/- 1,000 pound race car an engine based on a VW (US = rabbit) 1.6 L diesel block, Head is marked with VW/Audi stamps "21" "WWO 1.6" "049.103.373B" "583780" - been lead to believe that confirms it...

Could very loosely come under the heading of maintenance. I have a very industrious spider living in the drivers rearview mirror housing of my car. Has been there for weeks During the day it's parked outside my w/shop, but without fail every time I get in the car to drive home he/she has spun a thin web over the mirror, and which stretches back halfway along the door. How do I get rid of it...

Hi Folks! I'm asking for a friend of mine - a new owner of this model. 1600 motor, Weber carbs, points ignition, manual choke. The car refuses to start on the self starter when warm. If pushed it'll start right away. He's changed the starter motor to no avail. Any ideas? Bill, DK

Would appreciate any input on this one. Car is a 1993 (K reg) Audi 80 2.0 8v single point inj. Started to chug like not running on all cylinders. With engine running I disconnect each lead in turn and find that removing No. 4 makes no difference to the sound & pitch of the engine. Removing No. 3 only makes a slight drop but nothing at all for 4. Plugs, leads, rotor arm & dis cap are less...

David Cameron has this week been promising that the forthcoming Conservative government will introduce new legislation designed at clamping down on polluting, out-dated and dangerously unfunny motoring stereotypes. The plans were outline by shadow transport secretary A. N. Other-Tory, who was delighted to find that having the word "shadow" in his job title suddenly means that people will listen...

It stands to reason that the bigger the car - the bigger sized seats it will have . So , The flat bottom part of the seats will be measured and if they go over a certain size , Then a charge of £10 per square inch will added to the car road fund tax disc . For example , If the total area size is 12 inches over the alloted size then £120 will be added to the yearly road tax .

Halfords announced tomorrow that it will slap an unspecified, but considerable, surcharge, on all products for the worst polluting vehicles. A spokesman said, 'It's the right thing to do and will go some way to offset the tons of CO2 we have to sweep out from our forecourts every time a Gas Guzzler visits one of our shops.'

Under proposed imaginary legislation, car washes, both automated and 'by hand', will charge two or even three times as much to wash one of those gas guzzling monstrosities. A spokesman said, 'it's only fair that they pay more. Those cars are usually bigger and while they go through the car wash they pump out much more CO2'

********. I reckon it's Helicoil time. It wasn't me, I reckon some PO tried to "cure" the old weeping valve cover gasket by "nipping them up a tad". There was bugger all left, and the new gasket is leaking pretty badly near there. Anyway, no point crying about it. I don't want to do this myself, so I will drive the car to my trusted indy, assuming the gasket leak isn't too bad when I finish...

Am thinking of going to the British Motor Show in Docklands, London tomorrow (Friday 25th July). The press pre-views have been mixed and there have been few actual reviews. I first bought paint from halfords but when I did it the colour was a shade off and the paint was thin as hell. Hi, my radiator fan switch is just random now, so I really need to change it. I had a little go at removing the connector plug to suss out the procedure, but it wouldn't come off easily and I didn't want to break it. Any hints and tips about changing these, I'd obviously like to lose as little coolant as possible, and not break stuff in the process.

I have a Merc C200 CDi with about 50000 miles on it. Normally it's very responsive and powers up hills with no problems. Today it suddenly decided it wasn't going to do that any more - definite loss of power and absolute refusal to go above 3000 rpm. However, at lower speeds and revs it seems basically OK. Engine temperature appears fine, there are no warning lights or malfunction messages. Any...

Not labour - the torys thought this one up . Any tyre over the size 155x13 should be subject to a instant £25 per tyre tax levy - as obviously large/big tyres need more metal and rubber to make them - and cost more to dispose of . In a way this does make good sense as if you have something that is more damageing to the enviroment than other similar smaller products - then it is only fair...

Since then, I've changed air filter (was slightly dirty) bunged some STP Stop Smoke in the tank and thrapped it a few miles. I was wondering what else would help for the retest ? Oil and filter were changed 300 miles ago, fuel filter a couple of thousand.
