I had an AA man tell me it was the engine management system on my B reg
1.2 Nova that was playing up. It was a basic-as-they-come non-injection
engine with a carb. The only electronic bits on the engine were the
ignition switch and coil.

If he hadn't also said he was retiring in a few weeks because he
'couldn't keep up with all the new technology' I'd have made more of a
fuss.

That one turned out to be a dodgy earth strap, BTW, sometimes a good
connection, sometimes bad. And as I've seen in many of the electronic
gadgets I've worked on (and built from scratch) the errors you get with
intermittent connections are far from logical to diagnose.
