I've had an annoying electrical problem on my Golf Mk IV TDI's driver
door
for a while.
The switch is within the lock mechanism and they're known for going
wrong.
The front passenger door one went on our Bora. a replacement lock was £60
but some people have had good results just cleaning the switch.
Cheers Dave,
I've decided to bite the bullet (visit the Building Society) and pay the
dealer to fix it.
All the best,

While they are in the door, get them to replace the window regulator clips
as well. These are another common failure on the mk4 golf range.
I can vouch for that my sodding window dropped during christmas in the
lovely cold weather. So a strip down of the door in the freezing and fixing
the crappy plastic clips with the new metal ones in about 2 hours was not
fun.... happy memories!
Last month whilst the weather was tolerable I did all the doors in an
afternoons work just incase it decided to let me down at the worst possible
time.
