Default Running Diesel engine on vegetable oil

Can modern direct injection diesel engines run on vegetable oil ?

I read a Golf Plus brochure the other night. It indicated that the
diesel engine can only run on normal diesel fuel.

My old 97' Sharan TDI seems to run better with 5% to 20% SVO depending
on temperature.

Does anyone have any views on this subject ?

I've tried recycled chip fat in our relatively unrefined Citroen ZX, from
the local biodiesel pump. Even mixed with about 10% diesel, it runs like
crap and misfires on starting for a good while. Once warm it's just about
bearable... I'm switching back to diesel.

That's odd. Maybe it's **** fuel? I've ran 3 ZXs a Xantia and 2 XMs on the
stuff - but all new oil, and they've all loved it.

God knows, but it's £5 a tank cheaper than diesel. I'm going to run it at
75% veg oil, 25% derv I reckon...
