Default Running Diesel engine on vegetable oil

Can modern direct injection diesel engines run on vegetable oil ?

I read a Golf Plus brochure the other night. It indicated that the diesel
engine can only run on normal diesel fuel.

My old 97' Sharan TDI seems to run better with 5% to 20% SVO depending on
temperature.

Does anyone have any views on this subject ?

I've tried recycled chip fat in our relatively unrefined Citroen ZX, from
the local biodiesel pump. Even mixed with about 10% diesel, it runs like
crap and misfires on starting for a good while. Once warm it's just about
bearable... I'm switching back to diesel.

Reminds me of the petrol shortage back in 73. If you weren't around then you
should know that there were huge hour long queues at the garages and
sometime you couldn't get a full tank anyway. It was then that I discovered
that my mini would run on three quarters petrol and one quarter paraffin. It
was that or walk lots. Of course when I say, "run", what I mean is "sort
of". And then only with the choke full out. Plus it left the street smelling
like a badly adjusted giant hurricane lamp had just been through.

This is all true, whatever that means.
