Default 1990 Mk 2 5dr Golf GTI

Very original 5dr Mk II 1990 (H-plate) Golf GTI, big bumper, red,
solid car with only faded paint and the usual slight interior wear
letting it down. Just clicked over to 100,000 miles, I've had it for
the past 3,000 miles or so and have had no problems at all with it.

Good points:

1.8i - almost perfect engine for this car, well balanced, quick
enough, torquey and returns 44mpg reliably without 'economy' driving
techniques (in fact, trying to drive for economy makes bugger all
difference). Only time it has dipped below 30 is when stuck in heavy
traffic in Southend.

Original - unmodified, with the possible exception of the Pirelli
alloys which might be too early for this car.

Long MOT - June 2004.

Taxed to October.

Has Sony CD player fitted - the one that was £99 in Halfords last
month
- but needs new speakers.

Has never let me down. It was used to travel from the Scottish Borders
to Southend (and back) when we went on holiday, did the 388 miles or
so on precisely £30 of Optimax, sat for 2 weeks, and did exactly the
same on the return journey!

Classic insurance - around £200 if you have a second car, and could be
cheaper.

Bad points:

Passenger front window has stuck. New mechanism is £30 from VW or
£12ish from GSF/Euro or whoever.

No kit. It's really basic. No central locking, no power steering
(IMO, a good thing, but some people prefer assistance). Manual
windows. Manual sunroof (proper factory one, though).

Driver's seat has a small hole in the lower bolster and some wear to
the back. Gearshift gaiter has hole, probably from a thankfully mostly
removed Mul-t-lok device.

Car must have a Thatcham Cat. 2 immobiliser fitted for insurance. I
haven't done this yet.

Car is in Scottish Borders, pics and more info available on request.

£1,000 ono. £1,100 with new window mechanism and Cat. 2 immobiliser
installed (most likely a transponder type, as I hate those things that
you have to poke a keyring into).

(Sadly) Selling due to overspending on holiday. I've been driving it
in preference to my 306 since getting it, despite the weather :/

8 or 16v?

Got any pics?
