what's really wrong is the mount of such money that's wasted. We have a
fairly high tax burden overall in this country, though not, I think, as
high
as some. But the level of services etc. we receive falls short.

Agreed. Our council has just demolished a decent pub and will pull down an
office block next week just to build some new monstrosity that they can pull
down in 10 years' time. They are happy to spend money like this yet our
schools come bottom of the league tables (however you work them out). Come
to think of it, they are happy to spend money on the schools too. What is
lacking I guess is a bit of thought before they spend.
