Stewart - your experience with Direct Line is the opposite to mine - at
first they made no mention of requiring a certificate but, when I came to
notifying them that my conversion was completed they then wanted a
certificate of installation. Several other insurers I have contacted have
also asked for a certificate and I am currently in a stalemate and unable to
run on gas. I have also found installers VERY reluctant to certify my
installation. I think things have got much stricter during the last 6
months. When did you get yours past DL?

I guess it's three or more years ago now.

It was curious that I did check before hand to ask if they needed a
certificate. At first they seem confused by the fact that I was to do
the installation myself. They then confirmed that they needed a cert.
from a professional insataller. I can't remember their form of words,
but I did establish that it didn't need to be an LPGA approved
installer.

After I'd fitted the kit, I got the non-LPGA kit supplier to check it
and issue a cert. This was part of the purchase deal. But when I
phoned DL, certificate in hand, they said they only needed to record
the fact of the conversion. I did specifically ask them if they needed
to see the cert. and they said no.

I have noticed, and specifically queried, that renewal notices state
that there are no modifications to the car, but they assure me that
that have the relevant details and that everything is in order.

It has occured to me that I simply got lucky over a failure in their
admin., but I have also taken every opportunity to establish that
things are OK.

It's depressing to hear that people are now having trouble getting
certification and insurance. I wonder if this is the LPGA forcing
legislation by the back door - they can't get a change in the law
prohibiting self-fitting, so they put pressure on the inscos so that a
self fitted kit is impossible to insure, and thus effectively banned.

Can your kit supplier help, either with recommending someone to
certify it, or with an insco who is OK with these things? There are
some knowledgeable installers who post here from time to time, maybe
some of them can help.
