Hi Angus,
I have a Mk3 1.8GL (petrol) and I know that VW recommend changing the
cambelt on this engine every 60,000k; however, the Haynes manual suggests
every 40,000k is more appropriate. I've got just over 30,000k out of my
current cambelt so shall change it this year at some point. Better safe
than sorry and all that! Yeah, loads of stop/start journeys are likely to
wear it down quicker; as far as I know the distances above take that into
account. If you are doing only motorway miles you could probably get twice
as much life out of the belt - however, I really wouldn't risk it for the
low cost of a simple belt change.
Hope that helps.

There's the odd non-franchised VW place in Bath,
Would anybody know how long a cambelt for a 1.8 Golf Mk3 CL petrol is
supposed to last?
I gather they wear out quicker with stop and start journeys...
All the best,
