I take it then that 'They all do that sir' :-(

I'm sure the later MKs are much better, but are more expensive. Just
wondering what, if anything, could be done to make the MKIII 'more fun' to
drive.

A MKIII 16v GTI is fabulous fun and the lattter ones have as many BHP as
the MKIV 1.8 T (150BHP)
£3500 will get you quite a nice one. I've had mine for 2 years and not a
single problem.
Just make sure you get to listen to it start up from cold as the
hydraulic tappets can play a drumrole if the oil hasn't been changed
regularly
