Yep, that was what did it on mine, although to start with it would run

a

lot better if you cleaned the hall sender contacts which was quick and
easy to do.

What/where are the hall sender contacts?

On the distributor!

The fault is not as consistant as the symptoms to indicate cleaning them.

On my Corrado the disi went intermittent, after replacing it the similar
symptoms went away .

Yep, mine started stuttering on a long trip one day, massive loss of
power on A1 (which was fun) next thing as if nothing had happened. About
2 weeks later cut out on a roundabout, tried for 5mins wouldn't restart,
calls AA he gets there turns key it starts, runs it for 20mins no
problems, had the odd loss of power occasionally till one day does
exactly what it had done to me that day on the roundabout, but 18months
later. Calls AA out, yes it starts, but this time as soon as I applied
power to move it cut out, so he tested further and found intermittant
power on the hall send from the dizzy, finally tracking down the problem
I'd been suffering for a while.

This car is going a fixed distance before it stops - this to me is not
intermittent. Its more like fuel starvation.

Cleaning the sensor may not fix the problem as you have said your
problems have been intermittent and at different distances and time
intervals.
