Polo Problem - Can you help

My son's 1997 1.4 Polo has a problem with overheating.
According to the Haynes book the Polo has a two speed electric fan. There
are three wires going to the fan motor and to the thermostatic switch -
which ties up with it being two speed.
However, the thermo switch has two metal prongs and one plastic one. The
block on the back of the fan also only has two connections. The motor does
run but of course at only one speed given the above.
Has someone put the wrong fan motor and thermostatic switch in the car (for
another model?) or am I missing something?
I'm not sure what models got the 2 speed fan but I would think the 1.4 8v probably
wasn't one of them. I've never had a problem with my 1.6 getting hot even when pushed
quite hard (a few years ago I was a little less sell controlled *cough* ) so there may be
another problem causing it to get that hot. One other thing to consider is that '97 was a
change over year so the fan may have only been a single speed on pre/early '97 and 2
speed on late/after '97 or the other way round.
